Learn To Play Gospel Piano: CeCe Winans "Thirst For You"

I love to share with my readers any information I can find on Gospel piano, especially because I am passionate about gospel music.

I have played on various worship teams for over 30 years and I have found that worship songs are just so inspiring and soul-uplifting. When you listen to a worship band, you find yourself admiring the keyboard player who adds a lot of feeling to the gospel songs. Maybe you desire to play as skillfully as him/her. Playing songs of praise on your own can be achieved through gospel piano lessons. I learned to play the piano by ear with Jermaine Griggs music articles and piano resources on his website. For more information, visit his website: www.hearandplay.com

Find out how to play gospel songs on the piano or keyboard. Learn music chords because chords build chord progressions and chord progressions make songs. Make sure these are geared towards the enhancement of the musical skills regardless of whether you are a beginner or an advanced learner.

Gospel music in piano is usually played for worship and for your own pleasure. Gospel songs have two classifications namely Black Gospel or Urban Gospel and Southern Gospel. Today, some Black Gospel even adds hip hop quality to it while Southern Gospel was born as a unique genre to the early 1900s. So it is possible to learn Black Gospel or Southern Gospel by learning gospel piano lessons on the web, especially with Jermaine Griggs and Willie Myette.

It's fun to learn gospel piano on the internet. With music lessons, you can spice the music up by combining themes from religious music, with styles from different genres such as blues, jazz, and boogie-woogie. You can learn this method once you start practicing, especially knowing the Circle of Fifths. Keep yourself motivated and enjoy playing  gospels songs in your home anytime.

Choose to get involved in your  local church or ministry,  playing those gospel piano songs. Soon you'll be playing the piano with a group of singers and other musicians. If you feel this isn't your calling and you would be comfortable just playing worship songs at home for your own enjoyment, then watch how you grow as a pianist, moving your piano hands and getting more familiar with chords.

I love CeCe Winans and here's a song with the chords to one of her songs online:

Learn To Play 12 Bar Blues

Learn To Play 12 Bar Blues

Have you ever felt sad or lonely? Have you ever felt like singing about your troubles when you were sad? A lot of early Americans often felt this way because of the bad situations they found themselves in. They believed an important part of dealing with those feelings was sharing them.

Have you heard the expression, "Walk a mile in my shoes..." For some, that mile on the road has been dusty, rocky and weary at times but I have a lamp, a light unto my path! Walk a mile with me and I'll walk with you. Sometimes it's good we don't see down the road too far because then we see the small blessing right in front of us and those walking right with us. You're not alone! And you know what? I've seen some fabulous stuff on that road, too! The road is dark sometimes unless we have the lamp!

Around 1900 the blues had developed into a standard musical form of about 12 measures or bars that would be repeated for all the words of the song. Most blues are 12 bars long. But some blues are longer (16 bars) or shorter (8 bars) and some 12-bar tunes are not blues at all. Why is that? Because the blues is more than just a musical form; it’s a sound, a feeling, and an attitude. These things are not conveyed by written notes on the page. And just because the word “blues” appears in a song’s title doesn’t mean that the song is a blues. “Limehouse Blues” and “Bye Bye Blues” are great tunes but they are not blues. If you’re totally unfamiliar with the blues, listen to some of B.B.King’s recordings.

12 Bar Blues:
The twelve bar blues is one of the most important song forms in popular music, jazz, rock and folk music. Once you understand the twelve bar blues and its variations, you will understand hundreds of other songs guaranteed. It is really fun to play the blues. I love the sound of slow soulful blues played on the piano.

The twelve bar blues, the most common blues form, consists of three lines of four bars each. Each line consists of a two bar statement followed by an implicit response. Each measure is four beats since a lot of blues tends to be in four.

All of the forms use just three chords, and roman numerals are used to figure them. The first bar always refers to the I chord. The second bar is either the I chord again, or it can be "quick change" blues, which would be the IV chord. Bars 3 and 4 comprise the I chord again. Bars 5 and 6 will be IV chord, and so it goes.

12 Bar Blues Chords:
The I, IV, and V chords form the backbone of the blues. In most blues-based contexts, you can make the major chords into dominant sevenths (I, 3, 5, 7b) or even ninths (1, 3, 5, b7, 9).

I /// I /// I /// I ///
C C C C
IV /// IV /// I /// I ///
F F C C
V /// V /// I /// I ///
G /// G /// C /// C ///

A turnaround found in the last bar strongly propels the listener (and other musicians) back to the top for another round of playing. In more complex blues progressions, the turnaround often grows to two bars in length, then filling the eleventh and twelfth bar. Here’s what I mean:

I (C) IV (F) I (C) I (C7)
IV (F) IV (F) I (C) I (C)
V (G) IV (F) I (C) V (G) turnaround

In much of early blues, the meter was anything but strict. Beats and bars were added and omitted freely, according to the whim of the performer. In fact, it could be said that early blues performers felt the music as a flow of beats rather than regular meter and phrase lengths. Today’s blues are rigid and predictable in comparison. Any blues lover owes it to her/himself to check out early blues recordings.

I can hear the melody line being played in this popular blues lyrics with simple chord structure and bass walk downs. Have fun playing along. It goes something like this:

Oh, my baby left me, cold and all alone! cold and all alone
Oh, my baby left me, so cold & all alone! cold and all alone
Goin' to the depot, catch the next train home! (go home) 2xs

4 Supertramp Songs

I'm always being asked if I have the chords to songs by
Supertramp. I remember the high-pitched vocals of
guitarist Roger Hodgson

The band seemed to get very popular real fast. But I thought
the band broke up 20 years ago. My friend from Norway
loves their music. So, to answer some of my dear reader's
requests, here are a few chord charts to some popular songs

Gastown Piano Photo on Flickr

This is taken in the lobby of The Landing, a heritage building at the top of Water Street in Gastown.

This is pretty much the composition from the camera. I used the lens correction filter to straighten some lines.

Evan Leeson is a fabulous photographer. I admire his work greatly. I especially love this photo because I am fond of pianos. Yes, looking at them is awesome but actually touching the action of the keys is thrilling. Pianos are all different. I find the action of the keys on a baby grand to be a bit tight. Old upright pianos are somewhat easier to play. Perhaps that is because the strings are somewhat stretched.

There is also a  Steamclock on Water Street in Gastown, Vancouver. You will find lots of artists, boutiques and restaurants there and of course, this piano.

"Smoke Fairies have the endorsement of Jack White (credited as drummer/multi instrumentalist/producer) on their new single 'Gastown'. They are Katherine Blamire and Jessica Davies who have been crafting haunting left field folk together since their school days. 'Gastown' is a laid back folk rock effort featuring some nifty Crosby, Stills and Nash sounds, sweet vocal harmonies and fine guitar solos. It's accompanied by 'River Song' which, again, features some beautiful vocal parts as well as embracing sounds with a  folk melody. Very atmospheric.

These gals have very interesting, mesmerizing harmonies. Not my favorite music to listen to but none the less these 2 guitarists are very talented. If you're interested in their style or learning more about them, you might want to stop by and watch their videos.

The Vancouver International Jazz Festival celebrated its 25th year and Montreal singer Nikki Yanofsky
was there. I love her style and unique voice. The night time skies of Vancouver remind me of a song.

Fourth of July: Patriotic, Country and Popular Songs

The Fourth of July is here. The time of year when we celebrate America's independence by dancing with sparklers, having barbecues, and inviting people from neighbors and friends to join you.

This is the time of year we also get out our patriotic music, dust off our old CD's , crank up the stereo or cue up the Ipod to listen to songs about the good ol' US of A. Some of us might enjoy  listening to the National Anthem, probably sung by Whitney Houston,  but for those who believe "The Star Spangled Banner" is simply not enough, the following is a list of best Fourth of July songs, songs that just might light your fire cracker.

 Patriotic Favorites:

D/F# G G/B C
If my people will humbly pray turn from sin and their wicked ways
D/F# G
I will hear them and heal their land
G/B C
And show my glory and power again

D C/D
Lift your eyes up unto the sky
G
The Lord is coming, coming to America
D C/D
Can you feel the fire, can you see the wind
G C/E F D
Blowing through, coming to America again

Go and tell them the blind will see
The lame will walk and the slave is free
Shout the news that the lost are saved
In the name of Jesus the dead are raised
 American dream by Casting Crowns

D5 D/B
All work no play may have made Jack a dull boy

D5 D/B
But all work no God has left Jack with a lost soul

D5
But he's moving on full steam

D/B
He's chasing the American dream

D5 D/B D5 D/B D5 D/B
And he's gonna give his family the finer things

D5 D/B
Not this time son I've no time to waste

D5 D/B
Maybe tomorrow we'll have time to play

D5 D/B
And then he slips into his new BMW

D5 D/B
And drives farther and farther and farther away

E5 F#5 G5 D5
So He works all day and tries to sleep at night

E5 F#5 - G
He says things will get better;

Better in time

D5 G5 B5 G5
And he works and he builds with his own two hands

D5 G5 B5 G5
And he pours all he has in a castle made with sand

B5 D5 G5
But the wind and the rain are comin' crashing in

B5 D5 G5 D5
Time will tell just how long his kingdom stands

D/B D5 D/B
His kingdom stands

D5 D/B
His American Dream is beginning to seem

D5 D/B
More and more like a nightmare

With every passing day

D5 D/B
"Daddy, can you come to my game?"

"Oh Baby, please don't work late."

D5 D/B
Another wasted weekend

And they are slipping away

E5 F#5 G5 D5
'Cause he works all day and lies awake at night

E5 F#5 – G5
He tells them things will get better

It'll just take a little more time

D5 D/B
He used to say, "Whoever dies with the most toys wins"

D5 D/B
But if he loses his soul, what has he gained in the end

D5
I'll take a shack on the rock

D/B
Over a castle in the sand

E5 F#5 G5 D5
Now he works all day and cries alone at night

E5 F#5 – G5
It's not getting any better

Looks like he's running out of time

D5 G5 B5 G5
'Cause he worked and he built with his own two hands

D5 G5 B5 G5
And he poured all he had in a castle made with sand

B5 D5 G5
But the wind and the rain are coming crashing in

B5 D5 G5 D5 G5 B5
Time will tell just how long his kingdom stands

G5 D5 G5 B5
His kingdom stands
