Taylor Swift, Teardrops On My Guitar
Michael McGuire of the SF Country Music Examiner speaks highly of Taylor Swift Songbooks. "If you don’t play by ear, two songbooks featuring the music of Taylor Swift will help you get her songs down pat."

Roland Keyboard
A big thank you to my friends in Norway for stopping by. One friend in particular, Ballademaker, has shared his own music with us at SoundClick. He has been playing piano since he was nine years old. His influences in music are: supertramp, elton john, and billy joel, and jean michell jarre. He uses lots of equipment and knows how to put it all together in a song he has created: dx7 korg karma xp 80 roland keyboard. powermixer pmp 1000 behringer monitors is ms16 behringer midi interface romio software powertracks audio 9 laptop dell presicion m60 xp pro. I have played a Roland Keyboard and love the Vintage sounds. The Fantom X8 (to me) has the more realistic sounding grand pianos. But I must say, I'm more comfortable playing on my Motif. for me, it's the better board. I found this great discussion on Motifator regarding Motif ES vs Fantom X
http://www.motifator.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=1,2,4&Board=MotifES&Number=107442&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=7&o=&fpart=all
Ballademaker created many of his songs w/ a synthesizer. I agree that the manuals for the Motif workstation and Fantom X are not user friendly. It takes perseverance to digest the info and apply it to your board.

"The Fantom-X Series are the world's first "Giga-Workstation" keyboards, giving Fantom- X6 musicians nearly 1GB of wave memory when fully expanded and powerful 128-voice polyphony. The synthesis section's new waves include a gorgeous 88-key split stereo-sampled piano, plus room for 4 SRX expansions. The sampler can be upgraded to 544MB of RAM, which provides enough recording time to use it like a digital recorder. The Fantom-X Series is also the first line of workstation keyboards with a color LCD screen. Between these features and their sleek new looks, the Fantom-X Series is poised to become the workstation of choice."

Piano Hand Coordination Course Review
Musicians that play with speed and seem to do it effortlessly have simply found an effective way to train their fingers to think on their own. They've built up muscle memory, strength, coordination, independence, and speed over time using various techniques.
Here are some sites that I have found that answer and review piano hand coordination.
* Does the left hand in piano gets less attention since it usually plays chords?
"If you’re looking for a perfect way to keep your mind sharp, piano playing is the solution. It exercises several different parts of the mind and body, while providing you with years of musical enjoyment. Whether you play piano currently or are thinking about starting, playing piano is great brain food."
http://www.playpiano.com/wordpress/tag/hand-coordination
"Learning scales (don't groan). Double octave parallel motion scales are excellent for getting your hands to do different things at different times and when you start to get confident with them you can try a different tempo with each hand. Don't expect to do this overnight."
http://www.pianoworld.com/ubb/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=32;t=005292;p=0
"Watch our free video clips to learn and practice piano finger exercises to improve the coordination of your hands and fingers, which is essential for solid and fluent piano playing."
http://www.doremifasoft.com/frvipiex.html
Piano exercise that develops your coordination and musical ear. Hanon#1.
If You Know How to Play Scales and Arpeggios, You Can Turn a Child's Nursery Rhyme into a Sonata!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deTPbx0DMVM&feature=related
Here we continue to sight-read 15-note number sequences directly from our online fingering charts. So be sure to place your piano keyboard next to your computer screen so you can follow along with these fun piano exercises that will strengthen your hand-eye coordination skills.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGBW2TcG9tQ
What are Hanon Exercises?
"They are exercises specifically designed to train the pianist in speed, precision, agility, independence, dexterity, and strength of all of the fingers (and wrist too!).
They were created in the late 1800s by Charles-Louis Hanon, thus the short name "Hanon exercises."
They may come across as scales at first glance but are strategically designed to focus on certain fingers, depending on what exercise you're on. Some focus on several fingers at once (like the pinky and ring finger, which are known to be the "weakest links"). And other exercises focus on other areas.
One thing is for sure... Once you've mastered each exercise at the maximum speed suggested, you'll feel it and your piano playing will DEFINITELY show it!
Why they are so important to YOU...
Often times, when people practice, they are working on chords and progressions, and that is totally fine.
And outside of classical music, unless an "ear-musician" (someone who ONLY plays by ear) is exposed to exercises like this, they have no systematic way to get their fingers strong, independent and faster (...so they can play runs, licks, and scales with speed and precision).
Maybe they'll practice scales but these can get boring and repetitive over time. The end result is that ear-musicians will usually warm up with a few scales but the bulk of the attention will be put elsewhere.
And this isn't our fault!
1) Most ear-musicians have no idea what or who Hanon is... or his exercises!
2) Even if one is recommended Hanon by a friend (like I was several years ago), they must know how to read sheet music to play the exercises (or find a way to get them written out in letter format).
3) Then, if they find out how to play the exercises, they often times do them incorrectly and learn bad habits that have to be reversed later on (or worse, ignored).
By learning Hanon from a professional who is classically-trained but also understands the need for other types of musicians to be exposed to it, you get the best of both worlds!
Play faster and cleaner
than you've ever played before...
It's not JUST what you play, it's how you play it! A "major scale" played slow may sound basic and elementary sure enough. But do you know if you speed up a major scale by 3 or 4 times, that it will sound amazingly beautiful and can pass as "fancy?" ... Trust me, I've seen them played like this time and time again.
Improve both finger coordination and hand control in virtually minutes after the first exercise!
Perfect tons of finger movements and improve your hand positioning so you never feel out of place or out of bounds when you're playing!
Play with the best of them and never feel intimidated again because you'll have the speed, coordination, and strength to hold up!
Quickly and easily digest these one-of-a-kind techniques that have been slowed down so you can implement them right away and start seeing instant results!
Learn how to seamlessly adjust to different tempos and gradually improve your speed playing, one exercise at a time.
Never run out of gas! Intensify your playing speed and control to a level that'll even make the pros jealous!
Utilize a special "Wrist-Rotating" technique that many musicians don't know but really wish they did (for the maximization of speed)!"

* Mike Bereal Gospel Praise Video Clip
Michael Bereal ripping on the piano with Bryan White on bass. This is a preview shed clip for a new course coming out at hearandplay.com called GospelKeys Master Class Series I with Mike Bereal!

How to play Gospel on the piano:
Click Here, Gospel Keys Michael Bereal
"Here's Specifically What You'll Get Out Of GospelKeys Master Class Volume One"
How to multiply your options on the piano so that you never have to play the same identical thing TWICE. This is the difference between a creative, free-flowing musician and a "canned" one.
Diversify your sound and learn how to to add tender and delicate undertones to your style! NOTE: Not all songs need a lot of power-punched chords. Many times "less" ends up being a lot "more." Mike will show you when and when not to "punch it!"
How to think on a whole different level and quickly and easily play things that will have other musicians literally drooling at the mouth (isn't that what you feel like when you watch Mike's video clip? IMAGINE BEING THAT PERSON ON THE KEYS)...
Get contemporary! Now you can spice up your traditional gospel playing with loads of phat chords and placements from one of the hottest gospel musicians on the planet! (Mike has played for Mary Mary, Judith McAllister, Beverly Crawford, Donnie McClurkin, and MANY MORE!)
Master tons of arpeggio worship techniques on your right hand that'll have you sounding like a gospel veteran every time you sit down at the piano!
Learn the secrets to creating the perfect transitions and lead-ins to the next phase of the church service no matter what you're currently playing! NOTE: It is imperative that you master this as there can be a huge burden on you to effectively carry the worship service from one area to the next.
Incorporate Mike's "roll-over" method into your playing. This unorthodox move will literally turn everyone's head and give your playing that extra flare you've been looking for!
How to take songs you've redundantly played for years and drastically improve them so much that they feel foreign to you when you play them (I know it seems hard for a song you've played for 5-10 years to seem new to you but after watching this course, I guarantee you'll experience enthusiastic growth again!)...
"The Shouting Chord"
Play this chord at church when playing during a jubilant period of the worship service. It's simply a dominant chord with an added "flat 5th" tone. Now, the trick is that you don't play all the tones of the dominant chord. JUST certain tones sound right.
In Ab Major:
Bass: There isn't a particular bass for this chord. It can be played over a "running" bass if it is being used as a "fill-in" for shouting music OR ... it can be played in a blues progression. Keep in mind that this chord is just a "fill in." Play it when it "feels" right...
Right hand: Ab + D + Eb + Gb
Note: This chord should be played on the upper part of the piano (not too high but definitely not too low). Test it out at different locations for the best possible sound.
Here's one more trick with the chord above:
If you play the "D" just a split-second before the rest of the chord, it creates a nice "blues" effect. Try it:
Ab + (D) + Eb + Gb
Note: (" ") means to play JUST that one note a split-second before the rest of the chord. It sounds great!
Best Wishes,
LadyD

It Ends Tonight- All American Rejects
One of my piano students requested a song to learn, It Ends Tonight, by AAR.
I was pleasantly surprised to find a piano tutorial of this song on YouTube. It is a great song and I love the intro and the verse. Here's how I play the intro:
A/ G A C then to E note
G/ G A C then to E note
F/ F A C then to E note
G/ G A C then to E note
Then learn the verse and chorus and you're off and running with this cool song!

(Chorus)
G Am
Now for ten years we've been on our own
C Am Em D
And moss grows fat on a rollin' stone, but that's not how it used to be
G D Em
When the jester sang for the King and Queen
Am7 C
In a coat he borrowed from James Dean
Em A7 D
And a voice that came from you and me
Em D Em D
Oh, and while the King was looking down, the jester stole his thorny crown
C G - B A7 C D7
The courtroom was adjourned, no verdict was returned
G D Em Am C
And while Lennon read a book on Marx, the quartet practiced in the park
G D Em C D7 G C
And we sang dirges in the dark, the day the music died. We were singing
(Chorus)
G Am
Helter-Skelter in a summer swelter,
C Am
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter
Em D G D Em
Eight miles high and falling fast It landed foul out on the grass

The players tried for a forward pass

But the jester's on the sidelines in a cast

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume

While the sergeants played a marching tune
C G - B A7 C D7
We all got up to dance, but we never got the chance
G D Em
'Cause the players tried to take the field
Am C
The marching band refused to yield
G D Em C D7 G C G
Do you recall what was revealed the day the music died? We stared singing
(Chorus)
G Am C Am
Oh, and there we were all in one place A generation lost in space
Em D G
With no time left to start again. So come on, Jack be nimble
Em Am7 C
Jack be quick Jack Flash sat on a candlestick
` Em A7 D
'Cause fire is the Devil's only friend
Em D
Oh, and as I watched him on the stage,
Em D
My hands were clenched in fists of rage
C G A7 C D7
No angel born in hell could break that Satan's spell
G D Em
And as the flames climbed high into the night

To light the sacrificial rite
G D Em C D7 G C G
I saw Satan laughing with delight the day the music died He was singing
(Chorus)
G Am C Am
I met a girl who sang the blues and I asked her for some happy news
Em D G D
But she just smiled and turned away I went down to the sacred store
Em Am7
Where I'd heard the music years before
Em A7 D
But the man there said the music wouldn't play

And in the streets the children screamed
Em D
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed
C G A7 C D7
But not a word was spoken, the church bells all were broken
G D Em Am C
And three men I admire most, the Father, Son and the Holy Ghost

They caught the last train for the coast,

The day the music died. And they were singing
(Chorus)
They were singing

Free Zelda Sheet Music
I have a student who has found his niche playing video game music. He easily reaches the octaves, plays the melody line filled with eight and sixteenth notes. His speed is lively and accurate. If you're not familiar with The Adventures of Zelda, you'll soon be drawn into the excitement and wonder that the music produces!
What's my favorite song of the Zelda Series? Well, I would have to say the

Piano Chord Dictionary By Morton Manus. For Electronic Keyboard. Electronic Keyboard. Book. 48 pages. Published by Alfred Publishing. (285) See more info... |
Now that you know your major scales, the next thing is to learn the formulas for your 4 basic types of chords. Once you learn the formulas, apply them to each key one at a time until you go through all 12 keys. Here is the order that you should learn and play them in:
Major = 1-3-5
Minor = 1-b3-5
Diminished = 1-b3-b5
*Fully diminished = 1-b3-b5-bb7 *just an extension of the regular diminished chord
Augmented = 1-3-#5
As you go through learning and practicing the chords in this order, you will find that the last note for the augmented chord is also the last note for the major chord in the very next key. The next thing you should learn are the chords that are built off each scale degree of the major scale for every key. Again, learn it one key at a time until you go through all 12 keys:
1st - major
2nd - minor
3rd - minor
4th - major
5th - major
6th - minor
7th - diminished
Then move on to learning progressions. Play progressions like the 1-4-5, 2-5-1, 7-3-6, etc.

http://zone.hearandplay.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Review&file=index&req=showcontent&id=187
This Dvd will teach you everything you need to know to get started playing basic hymns and congregational songs by ear. If you're a beginner and would like your very own gospel piano teacher on dvd, this course is definitely for you! This dvd course moves at a very comfortable pace and leaves no questions unanswered.
Step One: Determining the Melody
Step Two: Harmonizing the Melody
Step Three: Adding the Bass
These three steps are not super complicated theories that require several years of experience. In fact, they were designed for the total beginner with absolutely no musical experience.
What most people don't understand is that most songs follow patterns. If you've been mistakenly learning songs, one by one, you're only exercising your ability to MEMORIZE chords --- and that's exactly why it takes SO LONG to learn just one song.
BUT...
If you concentrate on LEARNING PATTERNS, you'll never go wrong because songs are built on repeating patterns. You should NEVER
EVER have to memorize over 100 songs when they all share the same exact CHORDS, PROGRESSIONS, AND PATTERNS.

Mathematical Patterns In Music
Mark Van Doren said "The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery".
* Rhythm Patterns
Karen Sawyers and Janet Hutson-Brandhagen observe...
"Music is organized in mathematical ways: its melodies, rhythms, and harmonies are built on recurring mathematical patterns and sequences. To children, music is play in every sense of the word. In addition, early experiences with music that are successful and fun prepare children to be successful in other areas of learning, particularly math in their own way and in their own time."
The impact of music on the development of reasoning skills instrumental in math problem solving is great.

Breakthrough Study Proves Music Instruction
Vastly Increases A Child's Intelligence...
University of California, Irvine:
Music lessons strengthen the links between brain neurons and actually build new pathways between the neurons improving spatial reasoning according to a study conduced by Psychologist Frances Rauscher at University of California, Irvine.
The study compared pre-schoolers who took as little as 15 minutes per week of music/keyboard instruction with contemporaries who received no extra-curricular musical education. After a short eight-month period Rausher's data concluded. The results are astonishing:
A 46% increase in IQ is prevalent in the study group that received music/keyboard instruction!
Rauscher is so convinced that musical instruction is vital to the cognitive development of children that she shared her findings at a gathering of her American Psychologist Association colleagues, "Music instruction can improve a child's spatial intelligence for long periods of time - perhaps permanently." She added, "If parents can't afford lessons, they should at least buy a musical keyboard, or sing regularly with their kids and involve them in musical activities."
This study and many others like it confirm that musical instruction - in particular Keyboard instruction simply makes our kids smarter.

Benefits- Improves the quality of piano playing
Piano-Yoga says, "When people just start to play the piano or don’t play regularly, their fingers remain weak. It takes years of regular practice to establish strength in the muscles that work fingers and hands."
http://www.piano-yoga.com/Book/Benefits.aspx
"Just as an athlete needs to warm up properly before more serious exertion, a musician needs to warm up before playing or singing all-out. Players of different instruments utilize different types of warm-ups and can learn a great deal from the way they are structured."
