Learn To Play 10, 000 Reasons

Matt Redman: 10,000 Reasons
Jesus Culture Long beach

Over the summer I attended Jesus Culture in Long Beach, California. The huge hall quickly filled up with young people and the worship band began to play this beautiful song by Matt Redman.

Westin Hotel in Long Beach, California

We stayed at a beautiful place called the Westin Hotel. The facilities were grand and we walked a short distance to the conference. I hope you get the chance to hear this particular song in corporate worship. Perhaps you've played it on the worship team. If you're not familiar with the melody, here it is on YouTube.

C G D Em
The end draws near, and my time has come;
C G D Em
Still my soul will sing Your praise unending:
C2 G Dsus4 D G Gsus4 G to Chorus
Ten thousand years and then fore - - vermore!

Coda:
Em C D Em
I'll worship Your holy name.
C D G
Yes, I'll worship Your holy name.

It's a real easy song to play. For a C chord, I use this
inversion (G-C-E) and for a G chord, play (D-G-B)

3 'You Are' Songs with Chords

the letter Y
Many of you tell me that you're playing for your church and that you are with a worship band. That it so nice to hear and I thank you for sharing with me. I have lots of chord charts that I've saved over the years that mostly are in the Key of G, D and E. There's a few I have in A. The cool thing is that if you know how to play in all the keys, then it doesn't matter what key the worship leader chooses to sing in because you know your theory. Many of you understand the 'number system.' I'll talk about that some more at another time but here's a few oldies that I remember... the songs start with Y.

1. You Are My All In All
performed by Aaron Shust and written by Dennis Jernigan

G D Em
You are my strength when I am weak
            G C
You are the treasure that I seek
           G D G D
You are my all in all

G D Em
Seeking You as a precious jewel
             G C

           G D G D
You are my all in all

G D Em G C G D
Jesus, Lamb of God, worthy is Your name
G D Em G C D G
Jesus, Lamb of God, worthy is Your name

G D Em
Taking my sin, my cross, my shame
       G C
Rising again, I bless Your name
           G D G D

So, keep in mind these three charts are used in a band so everyone is on the same page. Keyboard players will want to play in a different register, upper range most likely and sometimes drop some bass notes. Remember, if you're soloing for the offering or playing songs at weddings, etc. you can always stylize and embellish when playing in another key, like Eb.

Jeremy Camp: Beautiful One

I love this song and have enjoyed playing it through the years with many worship teams. Usually we were backing up a worship leader who had a golden tenor voice. So, we played this song in the Key of G and also the Key of E.

I believe the words and music to Beautiful One are by Tim Hughes.

How To Play Blessing, Honour and Glory

golden sunrise

Beautiful sunrise photo from our view that I just happened to see one morning. The picture of hope with radiant sunbeams reminded me a song produced in 1992 with words and music by Geoff Bullock, called Blessing, Honour and Glory.  I have such wonderful memories playing the song and singing it on the worship team. I wondered if you're familiar with it. Here I am playing it on my Yamaha Motif ES8.

Casting Crowns: Who Am I

Casting Crowns (album)
Casting Crowns (album) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I'm a big fan of Casting Crowns. In a former post, I shared the chord progressions with you, to the song Voice of Truth. Now I'd like to share the chords to Who Am I that was written in 2003 by Mark Hall. The song is played in the key of Bb, moderately slow in 2.

Casting Crowns

Verse 1
       C G Am
Who am I? That the Lord of all the earth,
      G F G F
Would care to know my name, would care to feel my hurt,
       C G Am
Who am I? That the Bright and Morning Star,
      G F G F
Would choose to light the way, For my ever wandering heart,
    Am G F G
Not because of who I am, but because of what You've done,
    Am G F G
Not because of what I've done, but because of who You are,

Chorus

C G Am G F
I am a flower quickly fading, here today and gone tomorrow,
  G F C
A wave tossed in the ocean (ocean), a vapor in the wind,
          G Am G F
Still You hear me when I'm calling, Lord, You catch me when I'm falling,
           G F
And You've told me who I am..
     C
I am Yours.

Verse 2

       C G Am
Who am I? That the eyes that see my sin,
      G F G F
Would look on me with love, and watch me rise again,
       C G Am
Who am I? That the voice that calmed the sea,
      G F G F
Would call out through the rain, and calm the storm in me,
    Am G F G
Not because of who I am, but because of what You've done,
    Am G F G

I thought I'd post the chords here so you can follow along. I realize there are a lot of arpeggios here but I'll just share them as blocked chords and you can fill in the rest of the notes in the key of Bb.

How To Play Don't Grow Weary

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Eighth...
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Eighth_notes_and_rest.png original description follows. Two eighth notes (stems up and down) and an eighth rest on the staff. Created for the eighth note article. *Author User:Merphant Recreated in SVG fomat. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

A long time ago, I had the privilege of being on the worship team at New Venture Christian Fellowship. One of the highlights (way too many to count) was learning a song, Don't Grow Weary. It was written ©1993 Integrity's Hosanna! Music by Martin J. Nystrom and Don Harris. I loved playing this song on the keyboard. Here are the chords I found online and in the second chord chart I'll add more chords and show you what I'm playing. It's pretty easy going (probably a little corny nowadays but not a fast pace, pump up the crowd type of song. Do you recognize it?

Oh, and I wanted to mention another famous worship song, As The Deer, written by Martin J. Nystrom (along with chords) can be found here

Key: E

E
Don't grow weary in doing well,
E A B
don't surrender in the fight;
A E
Keep on storming the gates of hell,
C#m7 F#m7 A B E
Keep on doing what you know is right.

     A E/G# F#m
For there will be seasons of testing,
E A B C#m B C#m
and there may be weeping for a night;
      A E/G# F#m7
But soon we'll be reaping the blessing,
            A E A Bsus B
if we keep pressing on toward the prize.

E
Keep on praying in the Spirit,
E A B
keep on walking in the light;
A E
Don't be fearful or discouraged,
C#m F#m7 A B E
keep on doing what you know is right.

E/A E E/A E
Don't grow weary in doing well,

don't surrender in the fight;
C#m/A E E/A E B/C#
Keep on storming the gates of hell,
C#m7 F#m7 E/G# A B E
Keep on doing what you know is right.

A/E A E/G# F#m
