The first thing you will need to know to start playing the keyboard is some chords.
There are many different types of chords, the most common being the major chord.
All major chords contain three notes, taken from the major scale of the same letter name.
These three notes are the 1 (first), 3 (third) and 5 (fifth) notes of the major scale, so the chord
formula for the major chord is: 1 3 5

The C Major Chord

The C major chord is constructed from the C major scale. Using the above chord formula on the
C major scale, you can see that the C major chord contains the notes C, E and G.

C Major Scale

D  E  F  G  A  B  C
1   2   3  4   5   6   7   8
C       E      G

The chord symbol for a major chord is just the letter name of the chord. Ex., the chord symbol
for the C major chord is C. It is common to practice to refer to a C major chord as the C chord.
This abbreviation applies to all major chords.

Play the three notes of the C chord with the first, third and fifth fingers of your right hand, individually, and then together as shown below.

                                                 G
C  E  G = Arpeggio                 E  = C Chord (Blocked or Solid Chord), played at the same time.
1   3  5  = Fingering                  C

When playing a chord one note at a time it is referred to as arpeggio.

The first note from the major scale (and hence the first note of the major chord) is called the
root note. When playing chords with the right hand, the left hand often plays the root note.

Example using broken and solid C chords in the right hand with single bass note, C in l.h.:

C/ C, E, G, E

C/ CEG,  C/ CEG

C/ C, E, G, E

C/ CEG

Chord shapes can be illustrated by using chord diagrams.

The G Major Chord

The G major chord is constructed from the G major scale. Using the major chord formula
on the G major scale below, it can be seen that the G chord contains the notes G, B and D.

G Major Scale

G  A  B  C   D  E  F#  G
1   2    3   4   5  6   7    8
G        B        D

individually, and then together as shown in the following example.

The F Major Chord

The F major chord is constructed from the F major scale. Using the major chord formula on
the F major scale below, it can be seen that the F chord contains the notes F, A and C.

F Major Scale

F  G  A  Bb  C  D  E  F

Learn How To Play American Dream

Casting Crowns
Cover of Casting Crowns

In 2003, Mark Hall and Hector Cervantes wrote American Dream. The sheet music for the piano is in the Key of D. I've been playing the piano for quite sometime now and have found that the D5 piano chord is really easy to play. Do you have a favorite Casting Crown song? One of my favorites that I have blogged about earlier is, Voice of Truth.

American Dream by Casting Crowns

Intro
D Bm D
All work no play may have made Jack a dull boy
                Bm D
But all work no God has left Jack with a lost soul
               D
But he's moving on full steam
Bm D
He's chasing the American dream
                              Bm
And he's gonna give his family finer things

D...Bm...x2

verse 1
D Bm D
Not this time son I've no time to waste
          Bm D
Maybe Tomorrow we'll have time to play
                       Bm D
And then he slips into his new BMW
                          Bm E
And drives farther and farther and farther away

Pre-chorus 1
E G D
'Cause he works all day and tries to sleep at night
E G D
He says things will get better; better in time

Chorus
D Gm Bm
'Cause he works and he builds with his own two hands
D Gm Bm

But the wind and the rain are comin' crashing in

Will Robots Outperform Piano Teachers?

Will Robots Outperform Piano Teachers?

This guest post by John Surico of HeyKiki.com

Robots are the inevitable result of humanity’s technology obsession. As everything moves online, we continually rely on machines to take care of our daily chores. Some may see its growth as a possible sci-fi horror while others view the advancement of robots as a relief – for example, you can relax on your couch while the Rumba vacuum robot does its job.

But that efficiency isn’t limited simply to cleaning. Recently, companies involved in the robot industry have been testing new piano-teaching software that replaces the side-by-side method of a human being teaching you the ivories.

One such example is a machine called Concert Hands. Like its title, the robot attaches itself onto your hands and wrists. Once on, a wrist pilot transmits pulses to your fingers to guide them in the right direction – i.e., the next key of the song. We never said the robots weren’t demanding!

Another example is a robot teacher called Musiah. The voice echoing from your computer tells you the keys to play and judges you at the end of the song. According to the company, a student who uses this robot as a piano teacher learned how to play the piano five to eight times faster than someone using the outmoded human tutor method. The beauty of technology is the time you save.

With these aforementioned scenarios in mind, it’s easy to see the direction in which piano teaching is headed. Although there will always be those who have an affinity for real-life interaction, it is evident that robots have the ability to take ordinary piano lessons to a whole new level. This translates into more piano players, learning songs at a rapid pace. And we shouldn’t be scared of that. But if you want to get a head start, you can find piano lessons and instructors on HeyKiki.
