Learn Songs By Ear

How do I go about learning a song by ear?

Here's my answer to the question. When I listen to songs...

1. Find the melody (some of it first) and listen for where a song resolves. For example, at the end of the verse, you can hear the I chord (one chord) or the "tonic" chord. That tells you the key the song is in. When you know the key, then you can figure out the progressions from there, usually. And, it just takes time to hear major or minor keys.

2. Next, listen for bass notes. Most of the time you can hear the bottom the best, and then you figure out what chords will go with that bass note. I can hear "suspended" chords well (C F G) and augmented chords(a chord w/a sharp 5th) for instance C(#5) is C E G#. I can also hear a bass note with a different chord over it, for instance C\G = LH/RH G\C E G. Listen for your bass notes. Once you have your bass notes and a pattern, go from there.

3. Organization is the key. Type out the words, while listening to the CD. Stop, start, stop, and start. Get all the words typed out with space in between each line to write. This way, you can see and hear, the verses, choruses and vamps. So many songs are so much alike (at least very similar) that once you start to really engage your ears, you find you can play one song, and you can play 4 or 5 others you like.

4. Successful ear players have a plan, and a method. Find your own method. I need to "hear" things over and over, hearing the patterns, the chords, and paying attention to what's repetitive in the song.

5. Harmonize the melody. The melody note, that is the soprano part if it's a choir singing. Build your chord beneath that melody note and you have the choir parts too!

So, is it possible to Play The Piano By Ear?

* Yes, the ability to play a piece of music is simply listening to it repeatedly!

* Repetition is a great way to understand a song and chord structure.

* Figuring out the notes and rhythms to a song helps you to learn how to effectively structure a song in that particular genre.

* Playing by ear is also beneficial in helping a musician develop his or her own style; creating something distinctive, something indicative of them only.

* Learning music is the same as learning a language; it's acquired by years of hearing it, eventually coupled with formal training.

* Anyone can learn enough about the basics of playing by ear if they learn the following skills:

Being able to hear a tune and have a general sense of the contour of the melody -- when the tune moves higher or lower as the song progresses.

Learning to chart that melody contour either on paper or in their memory.(as mentioned earlier).

Learning to match the melody to appropriate chords.

Playing by ear is really a combination of three factors:

1. Using your tonal memory to recall music you have heard:

2. Using your ears and fingers to help you reproduce what you recall;

3. Using "melody contour" (the "shape" of the tune), "chord structure" (how to form the chords on the keyboard to match the tune), and "chord progressions" (the path chords take as they move through a song).

The real key to playing by ear is learning how to chart the shape of a tune, learn how to construct chords, and then determine the likelihood of chord progressions -- in other words, which chord comes next.

I have purchased these resources from HearandPlay and believe these are the best Books, Cds and Dvds on learning how to play a song by ear. Read more here and order today if you're serious about learning how to play a song by ear!

Play Piano By Ear Course

300 pg Course

Here's what my friend Ecio has to say:

"I want to send my thanks wholeheartedly to Jermaine and the team that makes possible to all of us hearandplay. I wanted to point that I have found a great deal of satisfaction in using the 300pg course. The course takes an easy approach to concepts that otherwise seem unreachable for those of us that use the self teaching approach. Although many of the concepts I've read before in other methods, I find amazing that Jermaine seems to expose every idea with the simplicity that makes it so easy to understand."

LadyD says:

* The 300 page course is a theory book with bonus CD (sound library- audio examples).
* I have found Jermaine's theory concepts simple to understand and apply.
* I am able to recognize songs, melodies and chords by ear better because of this course.

Have you seen the new HearandPlay Video?

This course offers 60 free online piano lessons, resources, and even a 300-pg Piano Course for students who are serious about learning to play the piano by ear. This course covers beginning techniques, music theory, chords, progressions, improvisation, and more!

Dear Friend,

If you are interested in taking your piano playing to the next
level, I think I may have struck the right chord for you. Just
last week, I was contacted by my friends over at HearandPlay.com
who specialize in teaching people how to play piano by ear.

Jermaine Griggs, the President of HearandPlay, just let me know
that his site had recently been updated with a few new piano
resources...

When I finally checked it out (because I was very busy last
week), I noticed one particular article that discusses the
differences between musicians who play piano from sheet music
and others who play by ear --- some of the advantages and
disadvantages of both.

The article focuses more on the advantages of playing by ear
--- obviously because that's their specialty. Here are just a
few of the many examples of what they said (you'll have to check
out the article for yourself to get the full story):

Advantages of Playing Piano By Ear

1) "Being able to instantly recognize chords that are played in
songs even without being at a piano."

*************************
How does this help you?
*************************

"You are able to learn songs faster and easier because you
understand why chords are played at certain points in songs."

2) "Not required to memorize chord progressions (pattern of
chords played one after the other) because understanding them
will automatically incline you to know what chord to play next."

*************************
How does this help you?
*************************

"Allows you to improvise and add your own "flavor" to the song.
This is especially advantageous when playing in a church as you
can never predict how long a song will be sung or what key the
singer might resolve to. In a band, this might be helpful if the
leader simply instructs everyone to surprisingly repeat a part
of the song or change the key in which the song is currently
being played in."

3) "Will allow you to use the same methods to play virtually any
song you want (most songs; don't quote me if you're referring to
Mozart as this might take more practice than most other songs)."

*************************
How does this help you?
*************************

"Saves you the money and time of having to go out and buy the
sheet music to a song that you've already learned how to play by
using the ability of your ear to recognize melodies, chords, and
progressions. However, buying the sheet music isn't a bad idea
if you want to learn specific parts to songs that have high
levels of complexity."

*************************

You know... I could really go on and on about this article, but due
to the lack of space, I'm going to have to send you to the
article so you can check it out for yourself:

Go to: Learn To Play By Ear

(...and if you're really serious about taking your piano playing
to the next level, you might want to consider taking them up on
their 300-pg course, "The Secrets to Playing Piano by Ear").

Meanwhile, let me know if you have any questions and I'll
answer or pass them to the right folks at HearandPlay.com.

Again, go to:
Learn To play By Ear

All the best,
LadyD

P.S. - There's also a little section in the article that talks
about major and minor scales, chords, and progressions. Check
out that section too.

Chord Fingering

* Piano Chords- Major Triads

Piano chords are formed by combining two or more scale tones (notes). You now know the notes that comprise all 12 major scales and you can play these scales smoothly. Apply this knowledge and begin combining the scale tones to form chords. You are now combining two or more intervals. The simplest and most common type of piano chords is the triad.

Here's detailed finger settings for hundreds of piano chords and scales, displayed in a graphical manner.

http://www.looknohands.com/chordhouse/piano/

A triad is composed of 3 notes from the major scale. A major triad consists of the 1st, 3rd, and 5th tones (notes) of a major scale. This is referred to as the root (1st), major third (3rd), and perfect fifth (5th). So, based upon this, C major chords would consist of the notes C, E, and G of the C major scale. The symbols for a major triad are Major, M, or Maj. Whenever you see these names or symbols following a piano note (C, D, Eb, F#, etc.) you know it is referring to major triad chords. Or if you are just given the note (C, D, etc.) it is inferred to be a major triad.

When you practice these major chords, I recommend you form them using the 1st, 3rd, and 5th fingers of your right hand. Thumb (1st), middle finger (3rd), and pinky (5th). Your left hand will form these chords using the 1st, 3rd, and 5th fingers also, but the numbering is pinky (5th) middle finger (3rd) and thumb (1st).

* Piano Chords-Minor Triads

You now know that combining the 1st, 3rd, and 5th tones (notes) of a major scale form major triad piano chords. If you lower the 3rd tone one half step it becomes a minor triad. So, minor triad chords are the 1st, b3rd, and 5th tones (notes) of a major scale. The b3rd is the symbol for "flatted 3rd". This means the 3rd tone (note) of the major scale is lowered one half step. You will also see this referred to as root (1st), minor third (b3rd), and perfect fifth (5th).

So, based upon this a C minor chord would consist of the notes C, Eb, and G. The symbols for a minor triad are minor, m, min. or -. Whenever you see these names or symbols following a piano note (C, D, Eb, F#, etc.) you know it is referring to minor triad chords.

Now, when you practice these minor chords, form them using the 1st, 3rd, and 5th fingers of your right hand. Thumb (1st), middle finger (3rd), and pinky (5th). Your left hand will form these chords using the 1st, 3rd, and 5th fingers also, but the numbering is pinky (5th) middle finger (3rd) and thumb (1st).

* Piano Chords-Other Triad chords

Two other 3 tone (note) piano chords are the augmented and suspended 4th. An augmented chord is formed by combining the 1st, 3rd, and #5th tones (notes) of a major scale. #5th (sharped 5th) means you raise the 5th tone (note) of the scale by one half step. Based upon this combination of tones, C augmented chords would consist of C, E, and G#. The symbols for an augmented chord are aug., (#5), and +5. Whenever you see these names or symbols following a piano note (C, D, Eb, F#, etc.) you know it is referring to augmented piano chords.

A suspended 4th chord is formed by combining the 1st, 4th, and 5th tones (notes) of a major scale. Based upon this combination of tones a C suspended 4th piano chord would consist of C, F, and G. The symbol for a suspended 4th chord is (sus4). Whenever you see this name or symbol following a piano note (C, D, Eb, F#, etc.) you know it is referring to suspended 4th piano chords.

* Fun with Finger and Chord Practice- Ezra Bufford

Chord fingering will become like second nature as you play chords in its root and inversions. Letting your fingers walk to the next chord, passing the note of the scale, will make the music flow. Sometimes the chord is not played on all 3 fingers with right and left hand. You can hit a C on your left and E G on your right to make a broken chord. Mix and match for variation. Of course let your ear judge which tone is good/better/best. Practice your scales, inversions, arpeggios, and of course your chords. Practice with the best and correct fingering from the beginning so you don't have to "unlearn" things later own. Get it right "slowly" from the start and then you will be able to fly faster later on.

Key Signatures and Their Games

Key signatures designate notes that are to be played one semitone lower or higher and consist of a series of sharp or flat symbols. Normally, they appear directly after the cleft sign.

The major key signatures are as follows:
G major with one sharp, D major with 2 sharps, A major with 3 sharps, E major with four sharps, B major with five sharps, F sharp major with six sharps, C sharp major with seven sharps, F major with one flat, B flat major with two flats, E flat major with three flats, A flat major with four flats, D flat major with 5 flats, G flat major with six flats, C flat major with seven flats.

The minor key signatures
are the key of a minor with no sharps or flats, the key of e minor with one sharp, the key of b minor with two sharps, the key of f sharp minor with three sharps, the key of c sharp minor with four sharps, the key of g sharp minor with five sharps, the key of d sharp minor with six sharps, the key of a sharp minor with seven sharps, the key of d minor with one flat, the key of g minor with two flats, the key of c minor with three flats, the key of f minor with four flats, the key of b flat minor with five flats, the key of e flat minor with six flats, the key of a minor flat with seven flats.

The Blues and Its Heirs

"It has been said that the Blues is the easiest thing to learn and the hardest thing to master. It is easy because it consists of a simple form of chord progression and verses. It is hard to master because it requires a deep-felt connection between the soul and the instrument or voice in order to express the emotion. More than anything else, it is this feeling which is the essence of the Blues." K.Christian Mc Guire
