Beginner: Steps to Success

Returning home from San Francisco, I was catching up on reader's emails, and I took a long look at many of your requests. I thought I would begin a series, Beginner Music Steps. That way, if you're an advanced player, just delete the post.

However, I have listened to so many discouraging and frustrated notes from beginners at the piano really wanting to learn the piano that I just knew I had to start at the beginning with lessons and instructions.

Steps to Success

Sometimes you may be asking yourself:

1. Did I play the right NOTES?

2. Did I remember to COUNT the RHYTHMS?

3. Did my song have a STEADY HEARTBEAT?
There's so much going on as you play the piano with rounded hands, counting aloud, and asking, "Was it steady without pauses?
Keeping your eyes on the music while listening, were there different dynamics? First, you've learned the notes in the Treble and Bass clef. It's so important to learn note names, (quarter, half, whole, etc.) and letter notes in C Position, (C, D, E, F, G). And yes, there's A and B notes, as well.

 Melodic Intervals

Another important step in learning music is to see and hear music intervals, that is the distance between tones measured in intervals. Notes played separately make a melody.

Melodic 2nds move from line to line to the next space or move from a space to the next line.  (C to D)

Melodic 3rds move from a line to the next line or from a space
to the next space. (C to E)

Melodic 4ths move from a line to a line, skipping a line. They may also move from a space to a line, skipping a space. (C to F)

Melodic 5ths move from a line to  aline, skipping a line. They may also move from a space to a space, skipping a space. (C to G)

Before we move on to another lesson with some beginner songs next week, along with the basic chord progressions of simple key signatures, be sure you know your music notes on the staff and you are practicing hearing the sounds of intervals in the melody line.

We'll be connecting both hands to a simple song next time. Be sure and leave me a comment below if you want. And take a look at the music resource (audio cd) with Jermaine Griggs teachings on piano chords. Chords 101 and 102

Circle of Minor Keys

Looking back at my last post and reflecting on some of my reader's comments,
I wanted to do a follow up post regarding minor keys. I had posted a song on YouTube, Winter Sonata, and had used mostly broken chords (arpeggios.) I use this style of playing in Classical music, romantic songs, sometimes new age music and especially for endings that seem to close out a particular song. I'm talking about rolling the chord, whether ascending or descending.

The Circle of Minor Keys

We have studied together and looked at the "circle of 4ths and the "circle of 5ths" before. Many folks are not familiar with the minor circle but it works pretty much the same ways as the circle of major keys but with one exception.

When you're trying to figure out the 3 chords to any key, look to the left and right of the circle but keep in mind that most songs written in the western hemisphere use the harmonic scale instead of the natural minor scale. The chord to the left is usually a major chord instead of a minor chord.

Here's an example. In the Key of Am, the 3 most likely chords would be Am, Dm and E Major, not E minor. Another way to say it, i is minor chord, iv is a minor chord and the V chord is Major. Now that you are learning what chords move up a 4th or 5th or down a 4th or 5th, you'll quickly recognize what the key of the song is and what chords are most likely in the song. So, memorize the Circle of Minor Keys.

It's the inner circle I'm focusing on in this lesson.

Am

Dm

Gm

Cm

Fm

Bbm

Ebm

Abm

Dbm

Gbm

Bm

Em

Practice playing in the minor key signatures and then switching back and forth to its
relative Major Key.

Let's talk a bit about minor keys and the bass notes. For example, the C Harmonic
Minor Scale is C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab, B, C.

If the bass note is C, the most common chord is Cm. Other possibilities would be, the iv chord with its fifth in the bass (Fm/C). For more info, visit Minor Keys

One Octave Minor Arpeggios

Winter SonataImage via Wikipedia
Winter Sonata

One of my musician friends has a good ear and guessed what key I was playing in! Are you familiar with Opening Theme-Winter Sonata? It is the main theme for a popular Korean Drama Series, Winter Sonata.

Here's the song on YouTube

So, what are arpeggios (broken chords) and how do I practice them?

In music, an arpeggio is a musical technique where notes in a chord are played or sung in sequence, one after the other, rather than ringing out simultaneously. This word comes from the Italian word "arpeggiare" , which means "to play on a harp."

First, I would use the correct fingering for both hands so the music would flow.

Sometimes the R.H. Fingering uses 1-2-3-5

Then the L.H. Fingering plays 5-3-2-1

But not always...

Here are some Practice Tips for One Octave Minor Arpeggios:
(Playing one note at a time with correct fingering.)

1. A Minor = A-C-E-A
   right hand  1-2-3-5
   left hand     5-3-2-1

2. E Minor = E-G-B-E
    right hand 1-2-3-5
    left hand   5-3-2-1

3. B Minor = B-D-F#-B
    right hand 1-2-3-5
    left hand   5-3-2-1

4. F# Minor = F#-A-C#-F#
    right hand  2-1-2-4
    left hand    2-1-4-2

5. C# Minor = C#-E-G#-C#
    right hand   2-1-2-4
    left hand     2-1-4-2

6. G# Minor = G#-B-D#-G#
    right hand    2-1-2-4
    left hand      2-1-4-2

7. D# Minor = D#-F#-A#-D#
    left hand      1-2-3-5
    right hand    5-4-2-1

8. A# Minor = A#-C#-F-A#
    right hand    2-3-1-2
    left hand       3-2-1-3

9. D Minor = D-F-A-D
    right hand   1-2-3-5
    left hand     5-3-2-1

10. G Minor = G-Bb-D-G
      right hand 1-2-3-5
      left hand 5-3-2-1

11. C Minor = C-Eb-G-C
      right hand 1-2-3-5
      left hand   5-3-2-1

12. F Minor = F-Ab-C-F
      right hand 1-2-3-1
      left hand   5-3-2-1

Piano Chords: One Moment in Time

Photo of Time

Are you familiar with the song
One Moment in Time sung by
Whitney Houston? I placed a few
videos of the song on YouTube
I wanted you to hear how rhythm
software can help with practice.

From time to time, I will be sharing easy songs
for you to play for your enjoyment or for the
church. I may post them on Saturdays and call them
"Simple Saturday"... we'll see.

In my blog posts, I've talked a
little about how chords make up
chord progressions that produce
songs. If you were to assign
numbers to each tone of the
scale, then that's how we get
the I, IV, V chords in a
progression. If you're a little rusty on your
basic chords, then you might want to take a
look at this music resource, Audio Chords

So, to breakdown an easy song like One Moment
in Time in the Key of C, you would need to know that
the I chord is C. Counting up, you would find that
F is the IV chord, followed by G being the V chord.
It's easy to find the minor chords in this song,
knowing with the assigned numbers to the notes of
the scale that the ii chord is Dm and the vi is Am.

In the second video, I am playing these basic
major and minor chords.

C = C/ E
F = CA/F
G = G/BD
C7 = EBb/G
Sometimes the F chord is played FA/F.
Am = AE/C
Dm = DA/F

For the ending, after you've played F/FAC, the right hand walks down
single notes are E,D, and C; finishing the song on a C chord, of course!

This is such a powerful song by Whitney. Once you get it down in a simple version, then learn it
then learn to play it in other keys that fit your voice range.
