Learn In Dreams: The Breaking of the Fellowship

The songIn Dreams included in movie cover art The Lord of the Rings
Featured in The Breaking of the Fellowship, the song In Dreams was written by Fran Walsh and Howard Shore. Copyright 2001, this beautiful piece is in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Shore composed the music in an emotional, operatic way, threading through the scores over 90 identified leitmotifs, which are categorized by the Middle-earth cultures to which they relate.

The music was performed primarily by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Voices, with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra contributing some of the early Moria music. A wide variety of instrumental and vocal soloists contributed to the scores as well. For more information on the film series, visit wikipedia.org

My junior high and high school students enjoy playing the piece, especially at recital time.
Play the song rather slow and flowing with 4/4 time signature.

There's a key change in the song. Do you know how to modulate a whole step up?
You can hear the change, usually almost towards the end for a dramatic finish.

How To Play Midnight Cowboy

1st edition (publ. Simon & Schuster)
1st edition (publ. Simon & Schuster) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

In 1969, the song Midnight Cowboy from the United Artists Motion Picture, "Midnight Cowboy" was released. The music, by John Barry and of course the screenplay is from the novel. Funny thing for me, is that I remember the music more than the show. How about you? Where were you when this was happening?

Wikipedia says,

Midnight Cowboy is a 1969 American drama film based on the 1965 novel of the same name by James Leo Herlihy. It was written by Waldo Salt, directed by John Schlesinger, and stars Jon Voight, in his film debut, in the title role alongside Dustin Hoffman. Notable smaller roles are filled by Sylvia Miles, John McGiver, Brenda Vaccaro, Bob Balaban, Jennifer Salt and Barnard Hughes; M. Emmet Walsh is an uncredited, pre-fame extra.
The film won three Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. To date, it is the only X-rated film ever to win Best Picture.

Here I am playing this particular movie song with a moderate beat, in a 4/4 time signature. My arrangement is in the Key of C but you'll hear tons of altered chords throughout the song. If you play the guitar, you'll want to visit the chart, Faith No More, Angel Dust

So, the challenging part is that I couldn't find a printed chord chart to this song online. I hope you can follow along with me, plus watch the video to see what I am playing. Basically the song is:

Intro:

Hope this helps. Have fun with it.

Obviously, this song has lots of guitar runs that you see me gently playing the walk downs in my r.h.
If you play the guitar, too... then you might want to invest in Guitar 301

One Octave Minor Arpeggios

Winter SonataImage via Wikipedia
Winter Sonata

One of my musician friends has a good ear and guessed what key I was playing in! Are you familiar with Opening Theme-Winter Sonata? It is the main theme for a popular Korean Drama Series, Winter Sonata.

Here's the song on YouTube

So, what are arpeggios (broken chords) and how do I practice them?

In music, an arpeggio is a musical technique where notes in a chord are played or sung in sequence, one after the other, rather than ringing out simultaneously. This word comes from the Italian word "arpeggiare" , which means "to play on a harp."

First, I would use the correct fingering for both hands so the music would flow.

Sometimes the R.H. Fingering uses 1-2-3-5

Then the L.H. Fingering plays 5-3-2-1

But not always...

Here are some Practice Tips for One Octave Minor Arpeggios:
(Playing one note at a time with correct fingering.)

1. A Minor = A-C-E-A
   right hand  1-2-3-5
   left hand     5-3-2-1

2. E Minor = E-G-B-E
    right hand 1-2-3-5
    left hand   5-3-2-1

3. B Minor = B-D-F#-B
    right hand 1-2-3-5
    left hand   5-3-2-1

4. F# Minor = F#-A-C#-F#
    right hand  2-1-2-4
    left hand    2-1-4-2

5. C# Minor = C#-E-G#-C#
    right hand   2-1-2-4
    left hand     2-1-4-2

6. G# Minor = G#-B-D#-G#
    right hand    2-1-2-4
    left hand      2-1-4-2

7. D# Minor = D#-F#-A#-D#
    left hand      1-2-3-5
    right hand    5-4-2-1

8. A# Minor = A#-C#-F-A#
    right hand    2-3-1-2
    left hand       3-2-1-3

9. D Minor = D-F-A-D
    right hand   1-2-3-5
    left hand     5-3-2-1

10. G Minor = G-Bb-D-G
      right hand 1-2-3-5
      left hand 5-3-2-1

11. C Minor = C-Eb-G-C
      right hand 1-2-3-5
      left hand   5-3-2-1

12. F Minor = F-Ab-C-F
      right hand 1-2-3-1
      left hand   5-3-2-1

California vs. France

I mentioned earlier that I recently returned from San Francisco upon viewing the premiere showing of the movie Bottle Shock.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bottle_ShockShot
Filmed in Napa and Sonoma counties, the opening view of Chateau Montelena vineyards is breath-taking. The relationship between a Father and Son, Jim and Bo Barrett is heart warming, played by Bill Pullman and Chris Pine. Alan Rickman ( you know him in Harry Potter) is by far a superb actor, and for all of you guys out there, I must say that Rachel Taylor is gorgeous!
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/07/31/WIOB120QLO.DTL

I was privileged to meet Gustov Brambila after the movie out in the lobby. He had the major role of wine making. We spoke of turning my avocado grove, on a gentle slope, into a grape vineyard. Gustov introduces me to his son and I, in turn, introduced them to my Daughter. Did I mention to you that she worked on this film? Why yes, and I am ever so proud of all of her accomplishments. To see your Daughter's name listed in the credits is HUGE!!!
The winning Chardonnay in the 1976 tasting will have you standing on your feet and applauding their sweet victory. If you like the music of the 70's and love the Doobie Brothers, then you will enjoy this film immensely. "Jesus Is Just Alright With Me", oh yes, do you remember how that one goes? Here's a sample:

You gotta' go see this great movie! Take a look at the trailer and see for yourself...
