Pumpkin Patch

I've been having a wonderful time while my granddaughter has been visiting. We visited
Bates Nut Farm and brought home a pumpkin. We then went to the keyboard to play and
sing some nursery rhymes. That got me to thinking about some Halloween songs and
I remembered a former post of mine, Free Halloween Piano Music.

October Musicians

If you've been playing classical music for sometime now, you may have played certain
arrangements from these musicians who were all born in October.

1 - Vladimir Horowitz, Russian/American pianist

9 - Camille Saint-Saens, French composer
     (wrote Dance Macabre, Op. 40)

10 - Giuseppe Verdi, Italian Opera Composer

12 - Ralph Vaughn Williams, English composer

14 - Gary Graffman, American pianist

20 - Charles Ives, Innovative American composer

21 - Sir Georg Solti, one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century

22 - Franz Liszt, Hungarian composer and pianist
(wrote Mephisto Waltz, a spooky piece!)

26 - Domenico Scarlatti, Italian composer and harpsichord virtuoso

27 - Niccolo Paganini, Italian violin virtuoso and composer

28 - Howard Hanson, American composer

Augmented and Diminished Chords

Article Source: Ezinearticles.com

The Diminished triads use only the minor thirds, one on top of the other. They sound dissonant and very scary like the interesting background music we hear from an old vaudeville skit. You know, when you see the lady tied to the railroad tracks. Oh, gosh, here comes the train! That is the sound I am hearing. They often create a very restless, nervous and tense feeling. So, C to Eb is a minor third and Eb to Gb is a minor third, too. Some folks refer to them as 'the Halloween' sound.
Keep in mind that the diminished triads can be used in your song playing as passing chords. They help connect two chords that are a whole tone apart. Here is an example of what I am talking about. If you are playing a song and at the beginning you play C-E-G (a C chord), why don't you hop on a C#dim chord on your way to Dm (D-F-A)?! I think you will agree, that is a very cool sound and a great transition in piano playing.

Moving on to Augmented triads, you will discover that they are made up of two major thirds. They also sound dissonant, and quite a bit noisy at that, like a honking truck on the street. In music they will definitely grab your attention. I have found these special sounds and transitions in popular songs that are from the 40's. When you look at these tones, C to E is a major third and E to C# is a major third as well.

From the Beatles music, (I'm a great fan) to Contemporary Worship (Gospel) songs, you will be discovering in your chord charts and soon playing these very interesting, set apart chords, the augmented and diminished chords.

Monster Mash

Remember this one, around 1993?

I was [G]working in the lab late one night
When my [Em]eyes beheld an eerie sight
For my [C]monster from the slab began to rise
And [D]suddenly, to my surprise

{soc}
(He did the [G]mash) He did the Monster Mash
(The Monster [Em]Mash) It was a graveyard smash
(He did the [C]mash) It caught on in a flash
(He did the [D]mash) He did the Monster Mash
{eoc}

From my [G]laboratory in the Castle East
To the [Em]Master Bedroom where the vampires feast
The [C]ghouls all came from their humble abode
To [D]get a jolt from my electrode

{soc}
(And do the [G]mash) And do the Monster Mash
(The monster [Em]mash) And do my graveyard smash
(To do the [C]mash) They caught on in a flash
(To do the [D]mash) To do the monster mash
{eoc}

The [G]scene was rocking all were digging the sound
[Em]Igor on chains backed by His Baying Hounds
The [C]Coffin Bangers were about to arrive
With their [D]vocal group, the Crypt Kicker Five

{c:Bridge}
The [C]Zombies were having fun (In-a-shoop-wha-ooo)
The [D]party had just begun (In-a-shoop-wha-ooo)
The [C]guests included WolfMan (In-a-shoop-wha-oooSTOP)
[D]Dracula and his son (Drum fill)

[G]Out from his coffin Drac's voice did ring
It [Em]seems he was worried 'bout just one thing
[C]Opened the lid and shook his fist, and said
[D]"Whatever hoppened to my Transylvania Tvist?"

{soc}
(It's now the [G]mash) It's now the Monster Mash
(The monster [Em]mash) And it's a graveyard smash
(It's now the [C]mash) It's caught on in a flash
(It's now the [D]mash) It's now the Monster Mash
{eoc}

Now [G]everything's cool, Drac's a part of the band
And my [Em]Monster Mash, it's the hit of the land
For [C]you, the living, this Mash was meant, too
When you [D]get to my door, tell them Boris sent you

{soc}
(And you can [G]Mash) And you can Monster Mash
(The monster [Em]mash) And do my graveyard Smash
(And you can [C]Mash) You'll catch on in a flash
(Then you can [D]Mash) Then you can Monster Mash
{eoc}

Will you be playing Halloween music this year as the little ones approach your home?
I have heard some fun sounds on CD and then there's some awful scary stuff out there.

Communion - Song by Barry McGuire

Barry McGuire in 1979.
Barry McGuire in 1979. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Back in the day, around 1977 my friend, Barry McGuire wrote the Communion Song. My husband met this wonderful man and talented songwriter at a party. We have heard Barry speak on TBN and have a special place in our hearts for his music, especially Bullfrogs and Butterflies for the children and this one, Communion Song for worship.

Listen to the mp3 song here.

 Chorus
Each time you do
Remember Me remember Me

Verse 1
Take this bread I give to you
And as you do remember Me
This bread is My body broken just for you
Take it (take it)
Eat it (eat it)

Verse 2
Take this cup I fill for you
And as you do remember Me
This cup is the new covenant
I'm makin' with you
Take it (take it)
Drink it (drink it)

Verse 3
Take this love I've given you
And as you do remember Me
Remember Me remember Me

http://www.worshiptogether.com/

I have several chord chart arrangements in my library. I'll start with the one that I like to use.

Gmaj7  A/G  Dmaj7  G   D
Take this bread I give to you
Em  F#m  G                A7  D
And as you do remember Me
Bm                      F#m/A   G                 D
This bread is My body broken just for you
G
Take it (take it)
D
Eat it (eat it)
 Em                 A
each time you do
    G  A7   D
remember Me
G       A7   D
remember Me.

Communion Song in C

C             Em7  F   G       C
Take this bread I give to you
F                 Dmin7    G     C
And as you do remember Me
Am                      Em/7   F  G     F   C
This bread is My body broken for you
F
Take it (take it)
C
Eat it (eat it)
 Dmin7                 G
each time you do
    G 7        C
remember Me
G7             C
remember Me.

When I played the song on the worship team, we used the chords above. I'm still leaning
towards the first chord chart because you can do lots of soloing with the song, while your
voice follows. Do you have a list of songs for communion? This is just one that I use.
There's so many more inspiring, reflective worship songs to chose from.

Here is the chord breakdown. Some folks are more familiar with sight reading the
notes on the music staff but it just takes some time and practice to read slash chords.

Mailbox Monday: Masterclasses

Comfortable Seating, Learning Resource Centre,...
Comfortable Seating, Learning Resource Centre, Edge Hill University (Photo credit: jisc_infonet)

What is a masterclass?

During a masterclass students take lessons in front of an audience, which is usually a group of other students. Sometimes parents and other teachers are present. People in the audience sit quietly, as if at a concert, and pay attention to how the teacher works with each student. They learn from watching the lesson.

Who teaches the class?

The teacher in a masterclass is often a famous performer or experienced teacher. When he gives advice to the student at the piano, the teacher will often talk not only to that student, but also to the audience, telling everybody about common problems in the piece that was played. This way all the musicians who are in the audience can learn, too.

There are often masterclasses at music camps and festivals or at music schools. Ask your piano teacher if she knows of any classes you can attend as a performer or a listener.

Benefits of Masterclasses

* It is a great opportunity to play in front of others and practice performing your pieces.

* The teacher's advice may give you a new way to thin about your piece.

* It is a great way to hear pieces you don't know yet (played by other students) and learn about various composers and styles.

* It is fun to share ideas about music with other pianists.

It is different playing at a masterclass than at a lesson because having the audience listening makes you want to play your best and make corrections as fast and well as you can. If you have participated in a masterclass and would like to share your experience, please let us know by leaving a comment.

Friday Freebie: Amazing Grace

amazing grace advanced version

One of my favorite hymns is Amazing Grace. I thought I would share mostly all free stuff today,
staying with the theme of the song. “Amazing Grace’ is a Christian hymn which is written by an English poet named John Newton in 1779.

"God's Amazing Grace" (feat. Rev. Timothy Flemming)

Lyrics to Amazing Grace

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now am found
Was blind but now I see

'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come
'Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far
And grace will lead me home

How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
In a believer's ear
It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds
And drives away his fear

Must Jesus bear the cross alone
And all the world go free?
No, there's a cross for ev'ryone
And there's a cross for me

Come, Now Is The Time To Worship (Chords)

Brian Doerksen

There's a few standard praise and worship songs that are in the archives of my worship folders. One is Come, Now Is The Time To Worship by Brian Doerksen and Come, Let us Worship & Bow Down by Dave Doherty. I have heard many different beautiful and talented artists perform these songs. Do you have a favorite worship song?

Chords to the song, Come Let Us Worship & Bow Down
Psalm 95:6,7

These are the chords I found online:

D Gmaj7 D A7
Come let us worship and bow down,
       G Em
Let us kneel before the Lord,
            G A
Our God and Maker.

    G D Em
For he is our God,
    G Asus7 A7
And we are the people of his pasture,
        G A7 D Bm
And the sheep of his hand,
        G A7 D Gmaj7 A7
Just the sheep of his hand.

Chords I'm playing in this praise and worship song:

D G2 G/B D/A A7/G
Come let us worship and bow down,
D/F# G Em7
Let us kneel before the Lord,
     Em/D Gmaj7/B A7/C#
Our God and Maker.

    G D/F# Em7 D/F#
For he is our God,
    G D/F# Gmaj7/A
And we are the people of his pasture,
        G A D/F# Bm7
And the sheep of his hand,
 D/A G A D
Just the sheep of his hand.

And then, if you want to modulate a whole step up,
here are the chords to the song in the Key of E.

Here are some long over due altered chords to share with you. Thanks for requesting
them. You've got to know your basic chords because when you string them together,
you're playing chord progressions which make up a song!

Wikipedia says:

In music, an altered chord, an example of alteration, is a chord with one or more diatonic notes replaced by, or altered to, a neighboring pitch in the chromatic scale.

Altered chords are thus constructed using the following notes, some of which may be omitted:
  • root
  • 3
  • 5 and/or 5
  • 7
  • 9 and/or 9

From Jermaine Griggs:

Here is a chord progression which utilizes a series of “altered” chords:
In the key of “Db major”:
“Fmin7 (b5) — Bb7 (b9) — Ebmin7 (b5)”
1)
Bass = F
Right hand = Ab + B + Eb
2)
Bass = Bb
Right hand = Ab + B + D
3)
Bass = Eb
Right hand = A + Db + Eb + Gb

Altered chords are mentioned in a chapter or so in the 300pg Home Course Book

Monday Mailbag: Piano Fingering

Piano
Piano (Photo credit: MagnuZ)

Israel and garindra have shared with me a common complaint
with their fingering during practice of the piano, along with
coordinating the l.h. and r.h. Many beginners and intermediate
piano students struggle with piano fingering... you're not alone!

Since our fingers have different lengths

 Reading Fingering To Piano Music

You will see numbers 1-5 written above or below notes in piano scales
and songs with sheet music. The numbers match and go with your fingers
and let you know what finger presses the key of the piano.

A Guide To Finger Placement

So, the fingering is the same for both hands:

Thumb: 1
Index Finger: 2
Middle Finger: 3
Ring Finger: 4
Pinky Finger: 5

Our fingers are of different lengths; the thumbs are shorter than the other
fingers. Generally speaking, the thumb is the strongest finger of all. The
thumb, index finger (2nd) and middle finger (3rd) are used the most for
piano playing. The fourth finger is the weakest and least used.  The following
are some tips on how to play piano with correct fingering by Yoke Wong.

1. Restrict the usage of thumb on black keys. You may consider using thumb

on black keys when the following occurs:

  • Playing chords with all black notes, for example: Gb major chord.
  • Playing chords with black and white notes, and the lower note happens to
  • be black note.
The fingers most used to play black notes are the 2nd and 3rd fingers.

2. When playing the melody with the right hand and some keys are out

of reach, you may move the whole hand to play the note. If the key is only
a couple of steps down from the thumb, you may use the thumb as an anchor and
cross the second finger over to reach the note on the left side of the thumb. You do
not need to move the hand. Just move the second finger over. Once the second finger
plays the key, the thumb will cross over to play the other note to the left of the key.

Suggestion: Practice the piano scales often to know what finger to use.

3. The same rule applies to the left hand.

4. Watch other experienced pianists whenever possible, look at their fingering and

imitate their movements.

Practicing The Piano

The easiest way to be able to play an entire piece of music with hands
together is to play the song in small sections and also to do plenty of
segments with separate hands in practice.

Wrapping Up With Rules for Fingering

1. It's most natural to use the middle fingers for the black keys.

2. It's knowing all of your scales without ever having to think about
the proper fingering.

3. It's essential to learn the standard fingerings for arpeggios in all chord inversions.

4. It's natural to change hand position at the same time in both hands, moving in
opposite directions. It's easier to remember passages in which the thumbs coincide.

5. It's often best to keep a consistent fingering, even if it sometimes means breaking
other rules; even if a motive or figuration is repeated in another key.

6. It's true that changing your fingering for a given passage can subtly and sometimes dramatically affect the resulting sound.

7. It's o.k. to write down the fingering that you're using during piano practice.
