I just learned that Fats Domino's birthday was yesterday! One of my favorite songs of his is "Blueberry Hill." Antoine Dominique "Fats" Domino, Jr. (born February 26, 1928) is an American R&B and rock and roll pianist and singer-songwriter. He was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Creole was his first language. For more information about this wonderful musician, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fats_Domino

I have a fantastic record collection. I've been collecting records for as long as I can remember. I love to play disc jockey and entertain family and friends with an eclectic music sample.

A chart topper in 1956 was Blue Monday.


Blue Monday" is a song originally written by Dave Bartholomew, and first recorded by Smiley Lewis in 1954. It was later popularized in a recording by Fats Domino in 1956, on Imperial Records (catalog # 5417), on which the songwriting credit was shared between Bartholomew and Domino.  Rock and Roll and Beyond

 Its origins lie in a combination of rhythm and blues, jazz, and country-western music. The earliest known song that represents rock and roll is the song by Bill Hayley and His Comets entitled "Rock Around the Clock" (1954). Soon after that song came out, a young man from Memphis, Tennessee, known as Elvis Presley hit the scene and reigned for nearly 20 years as the "king" of rock and roll.

This new style of music captivated the young audiences in America in the 1950's. It was, for them, a form of rebellion and a way to break out of the molds that their parents had set for them. In 1964 a little-known group known as 'THE BEATLES' came on an American tour. They became, in a very short period of time, the most well-known and successful rock band in history. Throughout the 1960's African-American rock music was known as "soul' music. It got its name from the emphasis that these tunes placed on gospel origins and heartfelt words.

Throughout time, rock music has come to be a term that acts as an umbrella under which an incredible variety of styles and sounds coexists. So strong has rock's influence been that composers have sought to incorporate elements of rock and roll in musicals, choir pieces, church music, and symphonies. Rock music, like jazz, country-western, and all the other styles of music, has taken the elements of music from the past and combined them in new and different ways to create an independent identity.

It is impossible to predict what will happen in the future. There are composers today who are hearkening back to the music of the past, and many composers today are desperately seeking to be the Mozarts or Schonbergs of the future. Only time will tell what music will bring to us, but rest assured that we will hear it loud and clear.

The Language of Jazz

One of the most challenging aspects of learning how to improvise or how to teach improvisation is knowing where to start. Most of us did not grow up listening to jazz around the house. However, we did grow up listening to one or two spoken languages that gradually became our. own. It's by the same process that we learn jazz language.

How does one develop a vocabulary? I have found that the easiest way to start is with Blues Scale. These six notes not only cover over the basic Blues changes, but can be applied in various harmonic situations. Just as a child's first words are 'mam' or 'dada', we can use the notes of the Blues scale as the same building blocks. Teaching in a group setting, use a 'Call and Response' format. Many students have never had a formal jazz improvisation lesson. Start by playing a rhythm with the tonic and have the students imitate it. Then ask students to come up with their own. Ask them, "If you can improvise with one note, why not try two?" And so it goes until we have progress through all six notes. This is from an article by Russ Nolan.

By adding one note at a time,  students are not overwhelmed or intimidated by the information. You can use these tools to immediately apply and have the confidence to try it again.

If students show a basic understanding of the Blues Scale, move on to the Bebop Scale. This scale is the basic tool used by advanced improvisors to smooth out their lines and land on chord tones on the strong beats.

The Bebop Scale is typically played in a descending fashion. By adding a half step in between the root and the b7, the root, 3rd, 5th, and b7th lands on the beats.


F7 bebop Scale has both major 7th and dominant b7:

F, to E (Half Step), E, to Eb (Half Step), D, C, Bb, A, G, F.

Practice this scale from the root, 3rd, 5th, and b7th in descending fashion, keeping the original two half-steps (F-E-Eb) in place.

Now we can apply our new scale to the Blues Progression:

Altered Pentatonics, Scales and Patterns

What is an altered pentatonic? It is any scale with five notes per octave that is not a major or minor pentatonic. Three of the more common altered pentatonic scales includes the b6 pentatonic, the b3 pentatonic and the b2 pentatonic. Each scale is essentially a major pentatonic with the exception of one 'altered' or changed note.

Play a major pentatonic while lowering the appropriate scale degree to achieve the altered altered pentatonic.

Here's some examples:

Major Pentatonic: C, D, E, G, A

b6 Pentatonic: C, D, E, G, Ab

b3 Pentatonic: C, D, Eb, G, A

b2 Pentatonic: C, Db, E, G, A

Due to the fact that pentatonics are not made up entirely of whole or half steps, patterns must be discussed in terms of skips and steps. A step occurs when the next note is an adjacent note while skips occur when the next note is an adjacent note while skips occur when we skip over a note in the scale to play the next available note.

Scalar Pattern with b6 Pentatonic:

C, D, E... D, E, G... E, G, Ab...G, A, C... Ab, C, D... C, D, E... E, D, C... D, C, A... C, Ab, G... Ab, G, E...G, E, D... E, D, C.

Intervallic Pattern with b2 Pentatonic:

C, E, Db, G... E, A, G, C... A, Db, C, E... Db, G, E, A... C, G, A, E... G, Db, E, C...Db, A, C, G... A, E, G, Db.

Try to create a few of your own patterns. They will help create new ideas, assist you with the memorization of the new scales and will acclimate your ear to the new sounds you are making.

Altered pentatonics can be very useful over a variety of different chord types.



b6 Pentatonic 1 2 3 5 b6

Major 7 #5 = 3 #11 #5 7 R

Minor (Maj7) = 5 6 7 9 b3

Minor 6/9 = 5 6 7 9 b3

Dominant = 9 3 #11 6 b7

Half Diminished = b7 R 9 11 b5

Running Changes

Once you've mastered the concept of playing altered pentatonics over a single chord or harmonic situation, it's time to move on to running some changes. Use b6 pentatonics in the context of a minor II-V-I progression. The trick to remember this sequence is that you will be building the b6 Pentatonic off of the roo b3 and 5 of the tonic minor triad.

Over Dm7b5 you will see a C b6 Pentatonic, over G7alt you will find an Eb b6 Pentatonic and over the Cm6 there is a G b 6 Pentatonic.

You might find that limiting yourself to one scale or sound can be liberating. Every note might not fit over every chord, but forcing yourself to find out what does work is often a very enlightening experience. Improvising means thinking outside of the box and expanding your creative abilities. Use your own ears as a guide for what works and what doesn't and you'll never be lead astray.

is truly evident that she loved the Lord. Perhaps she is singing in the angels choir.

Awhile back I wrote about bass lines. They are definitely in this song,
Saving All My Love For You.

Did you know that Errol Garner, the jazz pianist, was left-handed? So, I got to thinking about left-hand parts on the piano and how much time I have invested in piano practice to improve and strengthen my bass lines in music.

I've always been comfortable playing a melodic line with my right hand but when it comes to playing Alberti bass or Waltz bass, I seemed to need the extra practice, playing left hand notes separately until they were polished and then adding both hands together to hear a more balanced sound.

To achieve this, let's take a look at music and see how a composer will write harmony parts in many different ways.

1. Block chords look like all of the notes are stacked together, like a snow- man, and you play them together at once. You will find many blocked chords for your left hand in rock and roll and hymns, too.

2. Broken chords are when the left-hand plays the notes of a chord but one at a time. You can approach this by playing oom-pah rhythm or some say, boom-chick, like a repeated pattern of a single note followed by a chord. You will hear this in Ragtime in Scott Joplin music.

3. Arpeggiated chords make up notes of a chord that are played one at a time, like an arpeggio. They are found in Classical piano music and Pop music.

4. Alberti bass is when the notes of each chord is played starting with the bottom note, on to the top note, middle note and then up to the top note again.

5. Waltz bass is where the first note of the chord is on the down beat, the first beat of the measure and followed by the other notes on beats 2 and 3. It is played with a strong beat in a 3/4 time signature. This ballad style allows your right hand the freedom to pull out the melody line and just let it flow.

This is the basic introduction to left-hand movement. More advanced rhythmic patterns would include off-beats, swing and slow jazz waltz, to name a few. Plus, there is Latin rhythm to learn, such as Bossa Nova, Mambo Tango, Cha Cha, Rhumba and Samba.

No matter what level you are on, with many of the left-hand parts listed above, you can incorporate them into your music for rhythm practice.

Adele: Rolling In The Deep

 A lovely moment at the Grammys for me was hearing Adele belt out, one of my favorite songs,
Rolling In The Deep. I like her, plus her communication I saw on an interview. I just had a very brief moment this a.m. to walk through the music myself. Next time, I'll have it memorized. It's pretty simple to play. It's a fast, peppy song filled with power chords. It was nice to have Adele back with us after taking some time off for vocal surgery. I have not posted about Whitney Houston yet but I plan to after her memorial service, with respect for her family. As many of you know, she was one my favorite artists, along with the rest of the world! We all thought of her and felt very sad. WE will always love you Whitney... more later.

Wild Horses Tutorial

 I have been asked to do a tutorial for Wild Horses by Natasha Bedingfield. Now this was a bit challenging for me because my digital camera shut off in the middle of the lessons, so I had to break it down into 2 parts. How To Play Someone Like You: Adele



 Awhile back I posted the chords to an Adele song, Set-fire-to-rain. There was a little discussion going on about minor chords. Reviewing them, we remember to flat (lower) the third of the chord. So, Gm is a music abbreviation for G minor and you would play G, Bb, D together (block chord) or arpeggiate it, you know a broken chord that is rolled. Now, Dm is a D minor chord that is played on all white keys, DFA because a D Major chord is DF#A.

Adele has another song that I like called Someone Like You! Do you know it?
