Ear Training: High and Low

Friday Freebie: LadyDpiano

I came across a fun game for Preschool piano players! You may want to visit my WunderKeys Pinterest Board for additional resources. This particular game caught my eye because it's a familiar story, Five Little Monkeys! It's called, High and Low Game.

This upcoming week in the New Year I'll be sharing with my 3 to 5-year-old piano students High and Low Tones. For adults, it's an easy concept to play high melody tones with the right hand above Middle C. It's obvious to us that our left hand will grab chords and yes, sometimes single notes in the bass below Middle C.

Blob Chorus: Ear Training App l LadyDpiano

I start kids with ear training right away. A popular free app I use is called Blob Chorus. For adults, I wrote about Jazz Musician's Ear and an article, Piano Lesson: Ear Training.

Relative Pitch App

Another free app for ear training is, Relative Pitch Lite. Adults will like this one, too.

Closing out 2016. Hope it's been kind to you... Here's looking ahead to a great New Year!

Learn To Play Angels From The Realms Of Glory

Angels, From The Realms Of Glory l LadyDpiano

I wrote a blog post in 2011, Angels We Have Heard On High. I have the chord charts listed in the following Keys... D, E, F, and G. So many different arrangements to choose. I love the song and it is very popular with my piano students.

One song that you may be familiar with is called:

Angels, From The Realms Of Glory

The author of Angels From the Realms of Glory was an Irishman called James Montgomery. He came from a religious family background and sadly his parents, who were missionaries died following their vocation. Angels From the Realms of Glory was written in 1816.

How To Play Silent Night

Silent Night at dawn's first light

This morning as I looked out over the land, I came upon a little bit of fog that had settled low in the valley. The town was still lit from last night with all its Christmas lights and in the distance, you can see a stream of headlights from the early morning commuters. The stillness reminds me of the famous Christmas song, Silent Night.

History

"Silent Night" (German: Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht) is a popular Christmas carol, composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr in the small town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. For more history, read here.

So, in 2008 I wrote a few arrangements to Silent Night and ways to learn how to play them. I received some nice emails from the post. Thank you, dear readers. Is this one of your favorites for singing and playing at Christmas?

Book Review: Shaken by Tim Tebow

Shaken by Tim Tebow: Book Review

Yes, I know this is a blog about music. Specifically, teaching the piano but I have also reviewed a few famous authors who are popular musicians... Blueprint by Kirk FranklinPop Piano Book, Power Chords and Beginning Jazz Keyboard.

Now, I've been given an opportunity to share my review of a new book from Tim Tebow. No doubt you have heard of this famous football star. I was reading towards the begin.ning of the book where he meets Alicia Keys and you know how I love her songs and you can find chord charts like No OneUnbreakableYou Don't Know My Name and A Woman's Worth.

Perhaps you've experienced rejection with label recording. Maybe your heart has been broken with a failed marriage or your band broke up and all your dreams are shattered. Take heart, this book is for you!

Tim Tebow: Shaken l Book Review

My Review

"Shaken Discovering Your True Identity in the Midst of Life's Storms" byTim Tebow is an encouragement to us all! The author's second book points us to discovering our true identity in the midst of life's storms. From my past experiences in talking with Junior Seau and John Carne of the San Diego Chargers, I have not felt such warmth and compassion (like a young Timothy in the Bible) sharing from his heart the ups and downs he has experienced lately. Folks, this superstar in just like you and me.

To say everyone loves Tim Tebow is simply not true. The media went after him for 'taking the knee,' and I can recall numerous intense negative reports. What I found by Tim's example in facing the darts 'on print' and through the airwaves was to take heart and be strong. Knowing that all the shattered dreams (the high and low days) were working for his good in trusting Christ. The 'nay-sayers' cannot extinguish the light shining through Tim.

In my opinion, the book should be required reading for everyone. It's about character building. It's about not letting success or failure define you but knowing who you are in Him and following God's plan (what really matters). I admire Tim's convictions and there are many lessons from the book that I can apply to my own faith journey as well.

I'm happy the Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow is receiving more accolades in sports, playing pro baseball. Truly, he is getting the nod of approval from the Lord in fulfilling his destiny in sharing the gospel of Jesus to the world. Well done, Tim!

5/5 stars. Highly recommend. He hit the ball out of the park with this one!

Shaken by Tim Tebow

Tim Tebow: Shaken l LadyD Books Review

My Favorite Review

“Shaken is everyone’s story. All of us know what it is to experience the best of days and the lowest of days. For Tim, he’s lived those days in public. I have the privilege to call Tim my friend and can tell you that with him, what you see is what you get, which seems rare these days! I appreciate how real and raw Tim is with his own struggles. In Shaken you will find great encouragement for your own life and faith.”
—Chris Tomlin, worship leader and songwriter

My Favorite Chapter

We must cease striving and trust God to provide what He thinks is best and in irst stepwhatever time He chooses to make it available. but this kind of trusting doesn't come naturally. It's a spiritual crisis of the will in which we must choose to exercise faith. -- Charles Swindoll

About The Book

Who are you when life is steady?
Who are you when storms come?

Most of us have been on the receiving end of rejection, a broken dream, or heartbreak. And while this is not an easy space to go through, when we are grounded in the truth, we can endure the tough times.

In this powerful book, Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow passionately shares glimpses of his journey staying grounded in the face of disappointment, criticism, and intense media scrutiny. Following an exceptional college football career with the Florida Gators and a promising playoff run with the Denver Broncos, Tebow was traded to the New York Jets. He was released after one season.

In Shaken, Tebow talks about what he’s learned along the way, building confidence in his identity in God, not the world. This moving book also features practical wisdom from Scripture and insights gained from others who have impacted Tebow in life-changing ways.

Though traveling hard roads is not easy, it’s always worth it!

Beginner Music Steps: Rhythm

Tuesday Teaching: Rhythm

Rhythm

Music is composed of pitch and rhythm. While there are finer elements that come into play later on, such as dynamics and expression, music can be made by knowing simply this: which note and how long to hold it. Without rhythm, people couldn't fully read music. For a basic understanding of note value, yYou can read a short article about Rhythm in Music

Rhythm: Eighth Note

Rhythm is music's way of setting the duration of a note. Music accomplishes this task by varying the appearance of the notes that sit on the staff. Different rhythms indicate different note lengths. To get rolling, you need to hear about an essential concept; beat. Have you ever noticed how everyone claps together in a steady pattern? Did you ever wonder how 30,000 people could possibly agree on anything? If you have been to a dance club, you may have noticed that there is always a steady drum beat or bass line, usually up-tempo, to drive the music along. Those are examples of pulse and beat in music. Rhythm is a primal element and pulse and beat are universal concepts.

Basic Rhythms

In music, changing the appearance of the notes indicates the rhythm. As you will remember, the location of the notes is fixed on the staff, which will never change. The appearance of the note varies, indicating how long that note should be held. For a more complicated look at rhythm, take a look at Syncopation-Workshop of Rhythm.

Now, let's go through all the basic musical symbols for rhythm.

Quarter Note: LadyDpiano

Quarter Notes

A quarter note, which is signified with a filled-in black circle (also called a notehead) and a stem, is the simplest rhythm to talk about. Quarter notes receive one count; their duration is one beat.

Half Note

Half Notes

The next in our series of simple rhythms is the half note. As you can see, the half note looks similar to the quarter note, except the circle is open and not filled in. Like a quarter note, it also has a single stem that points either up or down. The half note receives two counts; its duration is two beats. In relation to the quarter note, the half note is twice as long because it receives two counts.

Whole Note

Whole Notes

A whole note is a rhythm that receives four beats. It's twice as long as a half note and four times as long as a quarter note - count to yourself: one, two, three, four. It is represented as an open circle without a stem. The whole note is probably the single longest rhythmic value that you will come across. Whole notes are easy to spot because they are the only notes that lack a stem.

Eighth Notes

Eighth Notes

The smallest rhythm you have encountered thus far is the quarter note, which lasts for one beat. Chopping up this beat into smaller divisions allows musicians to explore faster rhythms and faster passages. Chopping the quarter note in half gives us the eighth note, which receives half of one beat.

Sixteenth Note

Sixteenth Notes

The beat can be broken down even smaller for the faster note values. The next rhythm is called the sixteenth note. A sixteenth note breaks the quarter note into four equal parts and the eighth note into two equal parts.

I'll be talking about Triplets Vs. Eighth Notes next time!
