How To Form Basic Piano Chords

How To Form Basic Chords
Although chord finders are valuable tools on the Internet, what do we do when we’re sitting at the piano and don’t have access to the computer, trying to figure out chords?
Here’s a breakdown on forming many chords you’ll use in your piano playing. Yes, there are augmented chords, and there are 9, 11 and 13 chords. I have chosen a few basic ones to start with.
Major
Minor
Dominant 7th
Sus4
Sus2 and add9
Diminished
Major Sevenths
Major Chords
Starting from the root note, count up FIVE semi-tones (5 half steps). Always use the root note when counting. This will bring you to the second note in the chord. From and including this note, count up FOUR semi-tones (4 half steps). This will bring us to the final note in the chord.
Example: C Major - C is the root note in this chord. Count up 5 semi-tones from the C: C=1, C#= 2, D=3, Eb=4, E=5. Then, count up 4 semi-tones from the second note in the chord: E=1, F=2, F#=3, G=4. Play the C, E and G together and you have a C Major chord. By using this 'FIVE then FOUR' rule, you can work out any major chord.
Minor (m) Chords
For minor chords, simply reverse the rule for working out major chords. Instead of counting 5 then 4, count 4 then 5.
Example: C Minor - C is the root note in this chord. Count up 4 semi-tones from the C: C=1, C#=2, D=3, Eb=4. Then, count up 5 semi-tones from the second note in the chord: Eb=1, E=2, F=3, F#=4, G=5. Play the C, Eb and G together and you have a C Minor chord. By using this FOUR then FIVE' rule, you can work out any minor chord.
Dominant 7th (7) Chords
With 7th chords, you add an extra note onto the chord. This extra note is always the note two semi-tones (1 whole step) below the root note. However, you don't play this note at the bottom of the chord, you simply move it to the top of the chord.
Example: C7 – Form a C major chord... C, E, and G. The root note of this chord is C. Two semi-tones (1 whole step) below the root note is Bb. Add this Bb to the top of the chord and we have a C7 chord- C, E, G and Bb. The same rule applies for working out minor 7th chords.
Sus4 Chords
Example: Csus4
Play C major - C, E, G. Move the middle note of the chord UP one semi-tone (1 half-step). In this example, move E up one semi-tone. This brings us to F. Play the C, F and G together and we have a Csus4 chord.
Sus2 and add9 Chords
Sus2 Chords - Example: Csus
Play C major - C, E, G. Move the middle note of the chord DOWN two semi-tones (1 whole step). In this example, move the E down two semi-tones. This brings us to D. Play the C, D and G together and we have a Csus2 chord.
Add9 Chords - These chords are nearly identical to sus2 chords. The only difference is, is that you play the middle note as well. So, Cadd9 is made up of, C, D, E and G
Diminished (dim) Chords
Example: Cdim
Play C major - C, E and G. Move the TOP TWO NOTES of the chord DOWN one semi-tone (1 half-step). In this example, move the E and G down one semi-tone. This brings us to Eb and F#. Play the C, Eb and F# together and we have a C dim chord.
Major Seventh (M7) Chords
These chords are used a lot in Jazz music. With major 7th chords, you add an extra note onto the chord. This extra note is always the note ONE semi-tone (1 half-step) below the root note. However, you don't play this note at the bottom of the chord. You simply move it to the top of the chord.
Example: CM7 – Form a C major chord... C, E, and G. The root note of this chord is C. One semi-tone (1 half-step) below the root note is B. Add this B to the top of the chord and we have a CM7 chord... C, E, G and B.
Now you have some music theory to apply to your piano playing. Forming chords will lead to playing chord progressions which will then produce songs.
Until next time,

Jesus Is Love- Lionel Ritchie

"Back as a student in Tuskegee, Lionel Ritchie formed a succession of R&B groups in the mid-1960s. In 1968 he became the lead singer and saxophonist with the Commodores." Read more of Lionel Ritchie's bio

http://en.wikipedis.org/wiki/Lionel_Ritchie

"Lionel Brockman Richie, Jr. (born June 20, 1949) is an Academy Award and Grammy award-winning American singer, songwriter, record producer, and occasional actor, who has sold more than 100 million records."

"In 1980, the Commodores were voted "Favorite Soul Group" at the American Music Awards and won the Peoples Choice Award for "Best Song" with "Still". Surprisingly enough, the highly spiritual "Heroes", the Commodores' tenth LP, released the same year, was a poor seller in the U.K., at least compared to their previous albums, but went platinum in the United States. The singles "Old-Fashion Love" (R&B #8, Pop #20) and the title track "Heroes" (R&B #27, Pop #54) were obviously hits, but not big enough to end the malicious media speculations about the Commodores' heydays being over. The third single "Jesus Is Love" only made it to a disappointing R&B #34."

* Lyrics To Jesus Is Love

Father
Help Your children
And don't let them fall
By the side of the road, mmm...mmm...

And teach them
To love one another
That Heaven might find
A place in their hearts

'Cause Jesus is love
He won't let you down
And I know He's mine forever
Oh, in my heart

We've got to walk on
Walk on through temptation
'Cause His love and His wisdom
Will be our helpin' hand

And I know the Truth
And His words will be our salvation
Lift up our hearts
To be thankful and glad

That Jesus is love
He won't let you down
And I know He's mine
Deep down in my soul

Jesus is love
Oh, yes, He is
He won't let you down
And I know He's mine, He's mine, He's mine, He's mine, all mine
Forever, oh, in my heart
Help me, heart, heart
Ooh...ooh...

(Deep in my heart)
I know, I know, I know, I know
Ah, 'cause His love's the power (Power)
His love's the glory (Glory)
Forever (Ever and ever)

Ooh, yeah (Yeah, yeah)
Ooh, yeah (Yeah, yeah)
Ooh, yeah, yeah (Yeah, yeah)

I wanna follow your star
Wherever it leads me
And I don't mind, Lord
I hope you don't mind

I wanna walk with you
And talk with you
And do all the things you want me to do
'Cause I know that Jesus

(Jesus is Love, I know) 'Cause I know, Lord
(And if you ask, I'll show)
(Love is the word forever) And ever and ever

Who can bring you love (Jesus)
Who can bring you joy (Jesus)
Who can turn your life around (Jesus), oh

Ooh, yeah (Yeah, yeah)
Yeah (Yeah, yeah)
Hey

Who will pick you up (Jesus)
When you fall (Jesus)
Who'll stand beside you (Jesus)
Who will love us all

Hey, hey, Jesus (Yeah, yeah)
Jesus (Yeah, yeah)
Oh, yeah (Yeah, yeah)

One thing I wanna say
Who can heal your body (Jesus)
Who can make you strong (Jesus)
Who can help you to hold out (Jesus)
A little while longer

Ooh, yeah (Yeah, yeah)
Yeah (Yeah, yeah)
Jesus loves you (Yeah, yeah), Jesus wants you
If you call Him, He will answer

(Jesus) Call him in the mornin'
(Jesus) Call him in the evenin'
(Jesus) Call him in the midnight hour

Hey, hey (Yeah, yeah)
Yeah (Yeah, yeah)
Yeah, yeah (Yeah, yeah)
Yeah, y'all say it for me

(Jesus is love)

All Summer Long- Kid Rock

All Summer Long is a tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd band and Kid Rock doesn't hide the fact that it's a take off on Sweet Home Alabama. I love the patterns in this song. It's easy to play in the Key of D. D6, C6 and G6 are color chords that add flavor to your piano playing! What exactly is a color tone? Many of you know simple chord structure (basic three notes, also known as a triad). A color tone is an extra note added to the basic chord structure.

* Chord Chart to Hallelujah- Jeff Buckley

Intro: [C] [Am] [C] [Am]

[C] [Am]
I heard there was a secret chord
[C] [Am]
That David played and it pleased the lord
[F] [G] [C] [G]
But you don't really care for music, do you?
[C] [F] [G]
Well it goes like this the fourth, the fifth
[Am] [F]
The minor fall and the major lift
[G] [Em] [Am]
The baffled king composing hallelujah

Chorus:

[F] [Am] [F] [C] [G] [C]
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelu-u-u-u-jah ....

[C] [Am]
[C] [Am]
You saw her bathing on the roof
[F] [G] [C] [G]
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to her kitchen chair
[Am] [F]
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
[G] [Em] [Am]
And from your lips she drew the hallelujah

N|
[F] [Am] [F] [C] [G] [C]
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelu-u-u-u-jah ....

[C] [Am]
Baby I've been here before
[C] [Am]
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
[F] [G] [C] [G]
I used to live alone before I knew you
[C] [F] [G]
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
[Am] [F]
But love is not a victory march
[G] [Em] [Am]
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

[F] [Am] [F] [C] [G] [C]
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelu-u-u-u-jah ....

[C] [Am]
Well there was a time when you let me know
[C] [Am]
[F] [G] [C] [G]
But now you never show that to me do you
[C] [F] [G]
But remember when I moved in you
[Am] [F]
And the holy dove was moving too
[G] [Em] [Am]
And every breath we drew was hallelujah
[C] [Am]
Well, maybe there's a god above
[C] [Am]
But all I've ever learned from love
[F] [G] [C] [G]
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
[C] [F] [G]
It's not a cry that you hear at night
[Am] [F]
It's not somebody who's seen the light
[G] [Em] [Am]
It's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

[F] [Am] [F] [C] [G] [C]
Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelu-u-u-u-jah ....

* How Did Jeff Buckley Die?

For me, the song Hallelujah, has a sadness in the voice of Jeff Buckley.
Plus, the song has minor chords in it. And it saddens me to learn he lost his life at a very young age. And yet, the song still lingers in my mind, as do the words...

Chord Substitution

A friend asked me what substitute chord could take the place of D minor (ii chord) in the Key of C. Here's what I found:

* Any chord can be substituted for another which has the same tonic, dominant or traveling function. For example, in the key of C the progression becomes Dm7, Db7, CM rather than Dm7, G7, CM. ...

http://hum.lss.wisc.edu/jazz/substitutions.html

* So in the key of C, the primary dominant is the V7 chord, G7, and the subV for G7 is Db7. ... can play a D major triad on top of the regular C, E, G, and Bb. ...

So what is a substitute dominant chord?

Well, it's a dominant chord an augmented fourth, aka tritone, away from the dominant chord it's substituting for.

Replacing dominants with their substitutes

C7 / F7 / C7/ G-7 Gb7
F7 / F#dim7 / C7 / E-7 Eb7
D-7 / Db7 / C7 Eb7 / D-7 Db7

http://www.thejazzresource.com/substitute_dominant_chords.html

Substitute Dominant chords, sometimes referred to as tritone substitutes, are some of my favorite chords in jazz. On page 185 of Jermaine Griggs The Secrets To Playing Piano By Ear, he explains that the iimin7 chord can be substituted for a iv#dim7

* Chromatic Root Movement
This is one of my favorite changes in the key of G, play ii-sub V- I
Play D minor (D-F-A), Db (Db-F-Cb) and C (C-E-C)

* Tonic substitutes are chords which sound very similar to the tonic chord (or I chord) in a tune. In major keys, the chords iii and vi are often substituted for the I chord, to add interest. In the key of C Major, the I Major 7 chord is "C, E, G, B" the iii chord is e minor 7 ("E, G, B, D") and the vi minor 7 chord is a minor ("A, C, E, G"). Both of the tonic substitute chords use notes from the tonic chord, which means that they will usually support a melody that was originally designed for the tonic (I) chord.

Jim Brickman- Valentine

My all time favorite piano song for Valentine's Day, yep you guessed it...
Valentine by Jim Brickman, Martina McBride. Listen to Valentine mp3

http://www.imeem.com/people/5rAXoD/music/36Ov08mT/jim_brickman_valentine

"With a different track list than his 2002 album of the same name, 2008's Valentine finds contemporary instrumentalist Jim Brickman in his most lush, smooth, and pop-oriented mode. Brickman's piano playing resembles the atmospheric melodicism of George Winston (at times it veers into the radio-ready sound of mainstream pop balladry), and his performances make Valentine gleam." Valentine Lyrics
If there were no words
No way to speak
I would still hear you
If there were no tears
No way to feel inside
I'd still feel for you
And even if the sun refused to shine
Even if romance ran out of rhyme
You would still have my heart until the end of time
You're all I need, my love, my Valentine
All of my life
I have been waiting for
All you give to me
You've opened my eyes
And showed me how to love unselfishly
I've dreamed of this a thousand times before
But in my dreams I couldn't love you more
I will give you my heart
Until the end of time...
You're all I need, my love, my Valentine
And even if the sun refused to shine
Even if romance ran out of rhyme
You would still have my heart until the end of time
'Cause all I need is you, my Valentine
You're all I need, my love, my Valentine

A great song Come Away With Me, from the album (2002)with the same name, is sung by Norah Jones (lovely voice) and accompanied by the same artist. I love Norah's voice and this song is easy to play for beginners. It's easy, slow and simple. Have a listen

Come Away With Me Lyrics
Come away with me in the night
Come away with me
And I will write you a song
Come away with me on a bus
Come away where they can't tempt us
With their lies
I want to walk with you
On a cloudy day
In fields where the yellow grass grows
knee-high
So won't you try to come
Come away with me and we'll kiss
On a mountaintop
Come away with me
And I'll never stop loving you
And I want to wake up with the rain
Falling on a tin roof
While I'm safe there in your arms
So all I ask is for you
To come away with me in the night

The Shadow of Your Smile

One of my all time romantic songs is the Love theme from THE SANDPIPER. From the movie, The Shadow of Your Smile is sung by Barbra Streisand & Johnny Mathis. You'll hear Dave Koz on his sax. They received Grammy award Song of the year 1965. Here is
Elizabeth Taylor-Richard Burton romantic drama "The Sandpiper" (1965), filmed in Big Sur, California. Listen to the sandpiper soundtrack of this passionate, award winning song!

Learn to read music, learn basic 7th chords(5 for each key) in every key, this can be done out of most basic jazz theory books. Start by playing melody and bass note alone, then go to melody/RH and bass note-7th/LH. Memorize melody completely so you can play it with eyes closed. then add 3rd of chord in left or experiment with adding chord tones to RH melody. If you follow this, by that time your ear should take over and teach you to play the tune. Listen to great performances as well.

Kirk Franklin- Love Lyrics
Love a word that comes and goes,
But few people really know,
What it means to really love somebody,
Love, though the tears may fade away,
I'm so glad your love will stay,
Cause I love you,
And you show me, Jesus,
What it really means to love
(repeat 1x)
Love, the nights that I cried you loved me,
When I should have died you love me,
I'll never know why you love me,
It's a mystery to me now im glad i see jesus,
When all hope was gone you love me,
You gave me a song that you loved me,
Now I can go on cause you love me,
It's a mystery to me now im glad i see jesus.
the nights that I cried you loved me,
When I should have died you love me,
I'll never know why you love me,
It's a mystery to me now im glad i see jesus,
When all hope was gone you love me,
You gave me a song that you loved me,
Now I can go on cause you love me,
It's a mystery to me now im glad i see jesus.

Augmented Chords - When and Where To Use Them

Augmented Chords- When and Where To Use Them
A good way of using augmented chords is as a chromatic passing chord between a minor chord and its relevant major (IE. C#m, Caug, Emaj, as in the bridge of 'The Beatles' All My Lovin'), you can do the same thing in reverse of course.

http://www.pianostreet.com/smf/index.php?topic=30448.0

The augmented chord is formed by raising the perfect fifth a half step.
Augmented Triad = 1+3+#5
I gleaned some great points from Duane regarding Augmented Chords.
http://www.playpiano.com/wordpress/chords/augmented-chords-what-they-are-how-to-use-them
Augmented triads (triads are 3-note chords) are one of the 4 basic chord types, yet they are used very little compared to major and minor chords.
Major Chords = the main meal
Minor Chords = the side dish
Aug/Diminish = the spice
You don’t linger on them, but use them as transition chords between a major and another major chord, or between a major and a minor chord, or sometimes even between two minor chords.
When you play Battle Hymn of the Republic, first chord C, you can use C Aug before you land on the F chord for a nice transition.
Duane has some great photos of augmented chords, their formation in the left hand.

http://www.playpiano.com/Tips/Augmented.htm

Steps Make Thirds.
Steps make thirds and thirds make chords.
Before you can understand chords, you should first understand thirds. The half step is the interval we will use to make thirds. Half steps are the smallest distance between any two notes. When you play all the half steps it is called the “chromatic scale.” It doesn’t matter if the notes are black or white. For example, the distance between C and C# is a half step. E to F is also a half step.
The following formulas explain how to make thirds:
3 half steps = minor third (m3)
4 half steps = major third (M3)
Chord Formulas.
There are four basic triad chords. All more advanced chords are built on these. So, it is crucial that you understand the following formulas before you try to make more complex chords:
M3 + m3 = Major Triad
m3 + M3 = Minor Triad
m3 + m3 = Diminished Triad
M3 + M3 = Augmented Triad
Learn the Chord Symbols.
If “Eb” is our generic chord, the symbols for each triad would look like this:
Eb Major = Eb
Eb Minor = Ebmin or Ebm or Eb-
Eb Diminished = Ebdim or Eb°
Eb Augmented = Ebaug or Eb+
Moderator of HearandPlay, Hammondman says, "As for the augmented chords you can use them with or in place of 7th chords. 1 to 4 or 5 to 1 etc. The pattern for all augmented chords is simply raise the fifth note of any chord one half step. ex. c chord. C-E-G- raise the G to Ab.[C-E-Ab ] you can also add the seventh note also ex. C chord E-Ab-Bb-C. ALSO TRY ROLLING a D note with the chord. [ E-Ab-bB-D note to C note. This pattern works in any key."

http://zone.hearandplay.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=4743

I learned about chord formations from Hear and Play's Audio Chord music resource while on the go! Jermaine Griggs, founder of Hear and Play, teaches volumes of music theory on his Chords Audio 1 and 2
Dear Fellow Musician,
What if you could pop a CD into your home or car
stereo and learn everything you needed to know to
start playing beautiful chords on the piano? I'm
talking about all the same chords used to play
practically every popular song out there! The
ones you grew up listening to... the songs you
now enjoy... classic holiday tunes... even your
kids' favorite songs... and more!
What if you could learn all the chords that make
up those songs in just an hour or so? Would you
be excited? Well... You should be! Because at
www.HearandPlayChords.com, Jermaine over at Hear
and Play Music is going to reveal an approach
that allows you to learn anywhere: at your piano,
in your car, on your ipod® while at the gym ---
ANYWHERE!
So, if you have a CD player and two hours to
spare, then you have what it takes to start
mastering chords by ear.
Read the rest of this story at:
(Over 20 minutes of audio lesson clips at the
website)
You'll definitely find this new resource very
beneficial, especially if you're struggling to
grasp the concepts of chords! Believe it or not,
once you master chords, half of the battle is won
because songs are created ALL BY CHORDS!
Rush over to HearandPlay and read his entire report.
Step-by-step, you'll learn:
- How to form various types of chords: major,
minor, diminished, augmented and the easy theory
behind them. DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED. *
-The classes of chords and the difference
between triads, sevenths, ninths, elevenths, and
thirteenths... all broken down in "normal,"
down-to-earth, language. *
- One magic formula that creates all the
chords you'll ever need to know. All I'll tell
you is that it involves two words: Quality &
Quantity (and you need both in order to create
all chords). *
- How to form any major scale in seconds
using my "Why Won't He Wear White When Hot"
trick. *
- Easy ways to understand intervals (which
are merely distances between notes). There are
melodic intervals and harmonic intervals and
you'll learn both.
- The secret behind the "number system" and
how to use it to learn practically any chord out
there. I'll prove it to you with 7 practical
examples.
So I highly recommend that you go over to the
site. Don't forget to check out the 20+ minutes
of audio lessons! You'll be glad you did.
Augmented and diminished chords generally show up much less often than any of the others. But when you play an augmented chord, it will definitely add flavor that you need in a song! Arpeggiate an augmented chord over a dom. 7 chord. It will sound great!
Until next time,
LadyD
